Interview with Legend Brook

Published 2018-06-16.
What's the story behind your latest book?
My latest book is dedicated to my niece, Darien. She was recently diagnosed with epilepsy, so I spun a tale about the mysteries of what happens when one locks up with a seizure. It's a terrifying experience, but my hope is that by turning the unknown into a fantasy adventure she may no longer feel "weird", as she puts it.

The book will be titled "Fin" and fits perfectly within the center of the Amser Studios timeline.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
The idea of being in full control of something certainly helped appeal me to the "indie author" lifestyle. I was able to create an entire universe where the stories connect like pieces of a puzzle without the worry of a publisher standing at my back telling me, "You can't publish that."

This way, I can turn my notes into a mystical tale enjoyable to scifi and fantasy fans all over.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords makes it easy to release my work for free, where as other publishing platforms require a minimum list price. This way I can share my work with avid readers with a low budget for their hobbies, which I completely understand and often find myself experiencing.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
My greatest joy of writing comes from the satisfaction of getting one step closer to completing the Amser Universe. Perhaps I should take more joy in the actual writing process, but I can't help it! I am very very very excited about the ending!
What do your fans mean to you?
My fans mean the world to me. Without them I would have very little inspiration for my writing.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I happen to be one of those people who spend a lot of time in front of the tv. I enjoy a wide variety of nerdy shows like the SuperWhoLock fananza, Burn Notice, Psych, and many many other shows that dictate my life. However, when I'm not enjoying a television binge or creating my own means of entertainment I have a lot of fun spending time with the love of my life, traveling and hiking the woods outdoors.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Indeed I do, surprisingly. It was many years ago when I first picked up a pen without a prompt over my head. It wasn't a book idea by any means, but I felt the urge to suddenly write a short story that I later modified/developed into the gateway short story, "Princess of Amaryllis". It's a fun little traumatic experience bundled into a warm blanket and delivered by horseback. In other words, it's a historical romance thriller.
What is your writing process?
A long while ago, I came up with a handful of book ideas that, together, would create a fascinating, unworldly timeline of fantasy and scifi. While working on one I continue to develop these ideas into proper story lines. After finishing one, I then choose one of the other pieces of the puzzle and spin it into a proper story.
What are you working on next?
It's sort of up in the air on that one. There are a few I am thinking about tackling, like Reflection, Sol and the fourth and final book in the UNBELIEVE series, but I really can't be certain at this point. It depends greatly on what readers want but also what inspirations are set out for me with any given concept.
How do you approach cover design?
I typically do two covers for each book. The first is a basic, general concept or setting for the story and the second I try to make an actual scene from the story that's been turned into a still image. Ex. New World has the honey from Wendall's home farm with a note from his mother tied around the neck. Similarly, Ruin World's cover is of a flower crushed against cement, same as what happened to the flower Franny stole for Farren.
