Interview with Daphne Alward

When did you first start writing?
I first started wanting to write shortly after I first learned how to read. I remember cutting pieces of paper up into small pages, writing and drawing on them, and binding them with yarn tied through holes in one side. I have no idea what story I wanted to tell, just how badly I wanted to make a book of my own.
What are you working on next?
Paranormal romance (PG-13 of course... for now). I have three different ideas that I think are awesome, and I can't wait to share them!
What is your writing process?
I have conversations in my head between my characters every waking moment of the day. What would they say to each other, how would they say it, how would they respond to this or that situation, etc. Every character has a particular voice, a specific personality, and certain likes and dislikes and different ways they each react to things. I write the characters first well before the setting, because I want to get their voices down on paper. Then, it's just a matter of introducing them to each other, or to different situations, and letting them out to play.
What do your fans mean to you?
Everything. Seriously you guys are up there with my dog.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Oh geez... This was during my early life pink princess phase, so I think it was about a magical princess. The only two things I remember about it was that it involved a princess, and that I got really enthusiastic about explaining it to a teacher at my school once when I refused to answer the question she had asked. Somehow I still scored highly on the test.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
Well I saw my friend doing it, so I figured 'hey I have ideas, and I'm sort of capable when it comes to writing. I can do that too!' Just jumping on bandwagons over here, don't mind me ;)

Also, it's been my dream to publish something for longer than I can remember, and I just think that Smashwords is the way to go about it. I don't necessarily want to hit the New York Bestsellers list or be super famous or anything (although that'd be kind of nice, not going to lie), and I don't want the stress of dealing with a bigger company putting me to the grindstone. So, I'll just do everything myself. I've always been independent like that anyways.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Video games and errands mostly. Lately it's been modded RimWorld, modded Minecraft, or modded Skyrim. I like mods like I like my fanfic; Improving on the original with new ideas that don't break the canon story.
What do you read for pleasure?
Fanfiction, mostly. Yes, even the dirty ones :) I love seeing some of my favourite characters be put through situations new to them, and see how they react to it. It's a lot of fun for me to torment them in exciting new ways through fanfiction - Especially stories that don't overly change their core personality, or if they do, do it in a way that is new and interesting to me, such as bringing some deep-seated issues into the spotlight.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
My dog's bladder. If Nora's not outside by seven in the AM, there's going to be a mess on my floor. I can't allow that.
