Interview with Andrea Vermaak

Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
The first novel I ever read on my own (as a child) was Enid Blyton's 'The Magic Faraway Tree'. Since then, I could not get enough of the new friends I made in books, the adventures I went on with my new friends, and the wonderful mysteries of all the fantastic worlds I visited with them.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
In random order:

'American Gods' by Neil Gaiman
'The Lord of the Rings' by J.R.R. Tolkien
Beowulf
'Hamlet' by William Shakespeare (yes, I know, not a book, but read why...)
'To Kill a Mockingbird' by Harper Lee

These stories (yes, I know 'Hamlet' is a play) have resonated with me since I closed their back covers after finishing them. Some I have read twice; some more than twice. Their characters and plots strike deep chords in my soul.
What do you read for pleasure?
Books! My first loves are fantasy and mystery.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I quite like my Kindle.
When did you first start writing?
As soon as I could form coherent sentences.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
Though born in Pretoria, I grew up in Alberton (both in South Africa). I wrote quite a lot of poetry while at school (mostly regarding teenage angst, as is the norm. I think). My English teachers always praised my writing ability at school and encouraged me to study journalism. Yet it was not until I moved back to Pretoria after school, where I met my match in creative spirits, that I fully embraced my potential as an author.
Describe your desk
I have a shelf attached to my desk. On the shelf is a radio, a few CD's, notebooks, pens, a small bamboo plant, and a few treasured (though cheap) souvenirs. On my desk is a printer, my laptop, and loads of paper in paper trays. For the most part, it's quite neat where I work.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Online marketing such as emails and social media platforms.
