Interview with Andy Dale

Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
I do and I have still got it. I was nine and wrote Mr Mischief. It still makes me laugh when I read it now. Maybe one day I will publish it.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
There are authors I like a lot like Mike Gayle and Nick Hornsby, but usually I see the paperback first and then look for the ebook.
What is your writing process?
I make a note of everything I want to include. Then write details about each of the main characters. Then just really go for it. Often not knowing where the book is going to go. If it is one of my 80's retro ones I also research the make sure I correctly mention technology and events of the time.
How do you approach cover design?
I have a brilliant illustrator, Gary Dillon, who takes my quite abstract ideas and creates covers I hope people love.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I do most things on my iPad.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Facebook is always the big one, but I like to put on a big Book Launch as well.
Describe your desk
Generally tidy, but then being an IT bod I am very paperless. My laptop is all I need. Oh and I nice cup of tea.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I really am a Black Country boy. Born and bred in the West Midlands. My lead characters (even King Derek) are always local. Also the West Midlands gets a bad press sometimes and I like to talk about the many wonderful places there are. Like Dudley Castle where King Derek lives with Queen Queenie and of course Villa Park.
What's the story behind your latest book?
The story behind 'Just 14' is my early experiences following Aston Villa. It is about a young boy growing up during their title winning 1980/81 season. The title refers to Jonathan's age (lead character that first appeared in 'Piranhas in the Bedroom') and also the amazing fact that Villa only used 14 players that season. When you think now Premier League teams have 18 players in the team lineup now that is truly remarkable.
What do your fans mean to you?
I haven't really got a fan base but love the feedback I get from all my readers. I just want people to smile and have a bit of fun while they read any of my books.
What are you working on next?
I am working on a sequel to 'Piranhas in the Bedroom' called 'Snakes in the Stores'. This takes Jonathan and Helen a stage further and I think it will shock a number of readers to see what happens in 1988.

Set in a time when cassette players were cool, contact with home was a red phonebox, but alcohol, lingerie and high jinx were still the order of the day, First Years: Piranhas in the Bedroom is written with a great British dry wit. Its nostalgia for all things 80s as well as its “will-they-won’t-they” romantic comedy gives it a really broad appeal: The Young Ones meets High Fidelity.
