Interview with Andy Lang

Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
So many stories, and so long ago. I read the Lord of the Flies in secondary school, but that wasn't out of choice just like To Kill a Mockingbird! I guess the first story that I enjoyed was read to me (and the rest of the class by my headmaster Mr Cooper in primary school,) and that was The Hobbit.
The first story that I read alone was probably Watership Down by Richard Adams, and even at that tender age I understood that it was a stab at communism (the cold war was still simmering at the time!) I remember the paperback being very thick, and I said to myself then... one day I will write a book like this (the number of pages, but not the theme!!)
What are your five favorite books, and why?
The first has to be the ultimate best seller... The Bible, and I won't be making any justifications as to why!
Second, and I´m not really listing in any particular order now... is the Lord of the Rings. For me this is the ultimate fantasy world, and there is so much background information given and written it's sometimes difficult to remember Middle Earth really is fantasy and not ancient history.
Next: The Descent by Jeff Long. I have seen so many bad reviews for this book, and I cannot understand why. Mr Long creates a world beneath or feet that could so easily be true, and if you are interested in an adventure with both science and religion mixed in fairly equal measure... then give this book a try.
Fourth: Hamlet. Who can resist a little bit of Shakespeare? And I have always enjoyed the conflict of doubt and conviction... combined with a dash of insanity and treachery too! "Do It England!"
So many other books could follow, The Constant Gardener, The Bone Collector, The Pelican Brief... but I have to finish with an old favourite, The Seventh Scroll by Wilbur Smith. His writing has always appealed to me, maybe because I have always felt more at home in Africa than anywhere else in the world.
What are you working on next?
I have several projects currently. Predominantly I am working on the second part of Gondell's Quest. The first part was quite an epic (175,000 words) and I'm delighted to say that so far all the reviews have been 5 Star (and I didn't have to bribe anyone haha!) But joking aside, to be compared directly with the great JRR Tolkien makes writing a 750 page first half worth the effort, I hope that the conclusion will be received with the same critical acclaim!
Also I'm working on the first part of The Rise Of The Kressa trilogy. The introduction, Harvester 7, was my first venture into the science fiction genre, and like writing fantasy I found it fun (no-one can point out factual errors in an invented word!) Eventually the story will get published, but it will probably still be a while.
In addition, I have a new book in the pipeline. Non Plus Ultra (Latin for nothing beyond) which is still a working title... about two radically different men on opposite sides of the Straits of Gibraltar. One is a devious, irreverent conman in Spain, the other is a devout and decent Muslim in Morocco, two men thrown together by fate in a labyrinth of tunnels that join Africa, Europe and ... the lost continent of Atlantis!
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Peninah's Passion! The basis of the story came to me many years ago, but at the time I was too busy to actually sit down and write. Over the years the main protagonists changed, as did the plot and settings, I moved the action from the UK and South Africa to Spain and Kenya. Some things remained unchanged, Alex and Peninah racing to stay ahead of a ruthless drugs cartel determined to kill them both, it remained a love story but I also introduced an erotic edge, because not every marriage is perfect, and not every soul is stainless. The story became more about a man beginning to understand his wife's deepest needs, and a wife understanding that she cannot deny the desires and needs that live within her. The reviews have been mixed, some people hate it, some love the story... personally I embrace both the good and the bad because we all have our own opinions... if you like an adventure with a little kink and spice, why not give it a try and judge for yourself!
Who are your favorite authors?
JRR Tolkien
Jeff Long
Wilbur Smith
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Usually I need to pee!
But seriously, there are quite a few mornings that I wake filled with inspiration, the story is almost writing itself... those are the mornings I get out of bed quickly!
How do you approach cover design?
Honestly, I do my own! Some are good (in my opinion) some probably need work... in the future!
What is your writing process?
Sometimes I have a defined plan, but mostly I become consumed with an idea and just write!
My contemporary fiction books usually require extensive research, and so Traffik: The Stolen Girls and The Red Trade pushed me to learn about not only human trafficking but Macedonia, Pakistan, Indian Ocean shipping routes, Tanzanian witchcraft, albinos, organ harvesting, prostitution and police procedures, to name just a few topics!
Books like The Fountain of Saba and Tokoloshe were both seat of the pants and without any clearly defined path, in fact it might be said that The Fountain of Saba led me as James and Ayana followed a series of ancient and biblical clues, clues that came to me as the story progressed, almost as though I myself was doing the exploring!
So it might be said that I try to plan my books from beginning to end before I write... but they don't always go... to plan!
Describe your desk
My desk doesn't exist, sometimes I write outdoors, sometimes I write from my bed, but rarely at a desk. Being in Africa has advantages, 365 days of pretty much guaranteed sunshine lets me sit out and write!
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in England, in the south of Cheshire which is a county that is on one hand, almost in Wales, and also can't really decide if it's in the Midlands with Birmingham, or in the North West with Manchester!
But it is rural, and I think that brought me close to nature. In The Red Trade, Glenn, the reluctant hero is from Nantwich, my closest town growing up and the place I was born, and he clears his head and assesses his life as he takes an early morning stroll along the Shropshire Union Canal... I have done the same, so I guess that could be classed as influencing my writing!
