Interview with Angelina Souren

What's the story behind your latest book?
Ouch. Read it. We really need to talk about this.
What do you read for pleasure?
Detectives, thrillers. Also non-fiction.
When did you first start writing?
In primary school. I read lots and lots of books, too. In secondary school, I sometimes told the librarian that I needed a book for a school project to get access to books in the adult book section (as opposed to the children's section).

I was very disappointed when I realized that I would never be able to read all the great books that are written all over the world (but hey, I had to accept it).
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The fun is in the doing. Hard to explain. If you enjoy bubble baths, you know what I mean. How can you explain the joy of taking a bubble bath?
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up very close to moors and woods and I spent a lot of time roaming them, usually with the family dog (Robbie). At a very young age, I learned to be independent and be good company for myself. Reading lots of books, imagining myself IN the books I was reading, and also sometimes making up stories were all part of that.
Describe your desk
My desk usually has lots of stuff on it. Unless I've just given it a fresh coat of paint or a thorough cleaning.
What are you working on next?
Deterring a determined and very loud and energetic bunch of very cute (gorgeous) mice and catching up on sleep. Mice are nocturnal, in case you didn't know. I have discovered that they can smell spray millet from a large distance - impressive! - so I am developing some plans involving millet. Sleep deprivation makes me very grouchy, btw.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
iPad

Mixed Spices contains various kinds of very short stories and a few poems, partly in the style of Spike Milligan and Donald Barthelme. Some of the material is downright hilarious or as light as a fairy tale, some of it is dark and gloomy, and some of it tries to trip you up the way certain zen koans do, with their many possible interpretations.
