Interview with Ann Vanino

Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in New York City where I encountered the arts, diversity, excitement, challenge, the bizarre and the beautiful. I learned how to think, react and live quickly and developed an insatiable curiosity about the world that surrounds me. It is this curiosity and a love of life that led to my writing.
When did you first start writing?
I first started writing (with only myself as an audience) at 16. I was rebellious, individualistic, loved The Doors, The Stones and the counterculture and wrote poetry to express my feelings. My public writing started when I moved to the desert in 2000. My business was profiled in a local newspaper and its Editor asked me if I would write a weekly column on Coaching for the paper.
What's the story behind your latest book?
My latest book, Chrysalis: Personal Transformation From The Inside Out came out of my own profound journey of transformation. I thought about the parallels between my journey and Chrysalis, the transformation of a caterpillar into a butterfly. I wanted to share my experiences in a way that readers could relate to for their own journeys. I call my style a journaling stream. I use the stages of nature’s Chrysalis as containers for my writings—thoughts, musings, stories, and creations on personal transformation from the inside out. These writings form separate drops that come together and create a stream.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords provided a container within which I could keep my identity, learn how to publish independently and receive wide distribution. I share Smashwords' values and have soaked up everything they have to offer. Hopefully, this is the beginning of a long and mutually-fruitful relationship!
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Going deeply within, receiving insights and sharing those insights with my readers.
What are you working on next?
i have completed a new book, Kaleidoscope: Flying Together In Earth's New Energy, and am in the process of rewriting and polishing it. It takes off from Chrysalis exploring how we can transform, collaborate and thrive in a newly transformed world. I was excited to learn that a name for a group of butterflies is kaleidoscope.
