Interview with Anne Kennison

What do you read for pleasure?
I love all fiction and memoirs but I'm a real sucker for a great mystery. As a kid, I read every Nancy Drew book at least six times and now I'm a big fan of Michael Connelly. When it comes to having a way with words, I love Stephen King's writing. But hand me a well-written book with beautiful prose in just about any genre and I'm all over it.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I read on my iPad with the IBook and Kindle apps.
Describe your desk
My desk is as much cat bed as it is work space. I have two beautiful, big Ragdoll cats and they love to "help" me write when they're not napping. Each has his own bed and the two beds take up about 25% of my desktop. They also like to chase the cursor on my great big iMac and they are convinced that one day they'll actually catch it. I wouldn't know life without a cloud of cat fur! I have a picture of the most-handsome-guy-alive George Clooney taped to the side of my computer. My desktop is glass though only bits of pieces of it show between the piles of paper.
What's the story behind your latest book?
The whole unique plot came from an off-handed smart-ass comment I once made. I could tell you more but that would spoil it for you! You'll need to read the book and then come back and ask me about it!
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I actually have a literary agent who was willing to market the book for me but I guess I'm a bit of a control freak because I preferred to manage the whole process myself. I have published two non-fiction books under my real name (yes, Anne Kennison is a pen name) and prefer to retain ownership and control of my copy.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I just love words! One of my favorite books is the dictionary. I love to open it randomly and discover new words. I love putting words together and it's a wonderful and awesome thing when enough words come together to make a whole story.
What are you working on next?
The sequel to Death by Romance.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I a craft-y person. I make jewelry, dabble in photography, and design scrapbook pages for my two granddaughters. I love to read, play Scrabble, and spend time with my daughter and two granddaughters. My husband and I enjoy the opera, ballet, and the symphony.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
I do. It was called Dad Never Liked Peas. It's a short story about a young woman whose mother discovered, after years of marriage, that her husband had never liked the peas she'd been serving every Sunday with the pot roast. She began to wonder what else she didn't know about her husband and ultimately leaves him for the life she really wants. The young woman begins to wonder about her own marriage and whether her husband likes peas.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Well, truth be told, I tend to linger in bed with coffee and a good book. Luckily for me, I'm retired and I can! But what inspires me every day is the need to be creative, whether I'm making jewelry, writing, designing a scrapbook page, or working on my website.
What is your writing process?
I write when I feel inspired. Sometimes, days go by before I sit down at my desk. Other times, I force myself to get past a block and push through. I tend to write in long spells and I can anguish for what feels like forever over one paragraph. My first draft is always skimpy—my goal is to get the basic plot worked out and on paper. I add detail and color in the rewriting.
