Interview with Gemini Judson

Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Not really EVER, but I recall the first novel I wrote, with the intentions of publishing. Makes me blush to think of it... I was in college, and my creative writing instructor had a look of utter dismay when he handed it back after his review. I had paragraphs that gobbled up entire pages. I figure, hey - it worked for Nathaniel Hawthorne... The one thing I nailed, and he complemented me on, was my grammar. Yay me! AND, he said I could "turn a phrase". Wonder what that means...
What is your writing process?
Usually a clever title pops into my head. I'll be like "wow, that would make a great title..." Then I start thinking of a story to wrap around it. I'll pen out character sketches, a real skeletal outline, how the story will rise and fall, and the end. After that, I start writing and see how the nuances of each character start to unfold. I also make a cover pretty early on in the writing. This helps me immensely in getting a feel for the ultimate story.
How do you approach cover design?
Colors baby! It's all about color! For Turning Teal, I needed a cool wintery feeling, so the teal colors fit well with this. I'm one of those people who see colors in every word, every letter of the alphabet has a color, every number. E's are all green - no? R's are brownish-red. Mesmerizing needed to lean into warm neutral colors, and have a dreamy mystical quality. I love fitting covers to stories and when authors tell me, that's EXACTLY the way the characters would look, or the stormy sea, or the cabin, or whatever.
What do you read for pleasure?
I'm big on self-help and inspirational stuff at t he moment. I also try to read in my genre, so I have a pile of TBR in hot romance, and suspenseful romance. I always feel guilty when I am reading and not writing! I know they say reading is passive writing, but is does not get your manuscript done. My Kindle book collection is a hodge-podge of everything.
Describe your desk
Pretty much all about the labtop. I write in every corner, sitting on the bleachers at a basketball game, in a coffee shop.
What's the story behind your latest book?
Mesmerizing is a weird collection of memories and personal experiences, fictionalized with the witchy part. I knew someone like Kat, but I made her more magical. I lived in a town like Hawk Ridge and partied at house like the one Steve Rider plays cards at. That's how all my stories unfold... little snippets of memories or people I have met.
