Interview with Joshua Holmes

Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in York, PA. I grew up in the country, which gave us a lot of time to use our creativity. My Parents fostered an early love for reading and writing, and I took it with me into my collegiate and post-collegiate careers.
When did you first start writing?
I probably attempted my first story around age 12. My father paid me to try.
What's the story behind your latest book?
All my stories explore my condition, epilepsy, in some capacity (for the purpose of advocacy). I've seized in so many places, I just asked myself, What if I seized before a big event, and what if something terrible happened when I was unconscious (as is always the case during a bad seizure). And what if I added such a plot to my existing character, Remi Painter of The Design Series?
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I love writing for one. And I love designing. I could attempt to acquire an agent, and/or a mainstream press if I wanted, but I was trained in English, Editing, and Design, all things you'd fork out a bundle to the big boys to make a book a reality. I tried publishing one myself, had success, and I've never stopped.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords has helped me broaden my base. Whether through SEO or distribution, my name and brand has reached many more people, thanks to Smashwords.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The greatest joy of writing for me is that, in doing so, I am killing two birds with one stone. I can put my thoughts and feelings down (releasing personal excitement and/or stress), and at the same time, tell a story that connects (expressing something that someone else can relate to and/or can take encouragement).
What do your fans mean to you?
Well, as I mentioned earlier, I write for myself, but also for my fans. The fans validate the character, and the expressed views, and the fun nature of story. Feedback from my readers is priceless.
What are you working on next?
I've now written 9 novels. Three general fiction. Six suspense. I'm considering a children's book explaining epilepsy to children. Fear over the condition is prevalent. Killing stigma early in a fun way would really benefit society.
Who are your favorite authors?
Some of my favorite Authors are Harlan Coben, John Gilstrap, Linwood Barclay, Ted Dekker, Patricia Cornwell, and Carlos Ruiz Zafon
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Each day is given me by the Lord, so I do my best to make every minute worthwhile, wasting none of it. Writing, Fine Art, and designing are my loves, so I strive to improve in all talent areas. I try to use my talents to impact my customers and readers all the time.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I help others refine, edit, prepare their picture/written books for publishing. I also do a little web design.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
Honestly, I stick to hard copies. I enjoy the smell of the pages, and ripping the binding.
What is your writing process?
I read somwhere that there are outliners and pantsers. I don't have the patience to outline and then write. I have a loose idea of the story and alternate between characters. But for the most part I just ask, "What next?"
How do you approach cover design?
I have a specific type I stick to. But I stick to minimalism. I fall back on my graphic symbolism coursework, create lists of possible symbols, and I experiment a lot!
What do you read for pleasure?
I read suspense genre books, sometimes nonfiction or general fiction.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
Again, I don't really use ereaders, but Apple's ibook reader is nice.
