Interview with Kirby Elaine

Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Baltimore City, Maryland. It has influenced my writing more than I thought it would. The diversity of the schools I attended and the neighbor in which I was raised has influenced how I write my characters. In "Healing Wounds" my character Jayda is a Baltimore native.
When did you first start writing?
At age nine I began writing poetry. It wasn't until high school that I got into short stories and eventually novels.
What's the story behind your latest book?
My debut novel chronicles the life of two best friends and how they overcome the trials life has dealt them. It evolved from a completely different story in which the characters had fallen in love with the characters. In the end I wanted them to fall in love with each other so I made it a story where they help each other through various issues.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
The network of indie authors is so close and connected I decided it was where I wanted to be.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Seeing the finish product.
What do your fans mean to you?
Everything. I don't expect to make it big but every fan makes me feel so incredibly special. Even before the release the support was awesome!
What are you working on next?
A sequel to "Healing Wounds". If you read the first you know exactly where the sequel picks up. It's almost done!
Who are your favorite authors?
Jackie Chanel, Stephen King, Nicole Castro, Nick Miller, & Bella Andre
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Life. My daughter, my family, writing, meeting new people, and trying new things.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Spending time with my daughter or family.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
Browse amazon, try what other writers suggest, twitter.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes. It was in high school I wrote about a Jewish woman who falls for a Nazi soldier.
What is your writing process?
Just write when it comes to me. I worry about the pretty stuff later.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
The Shawshank Redemption by Stephen King. The words were AMAZING. He inspired me to write.
How do you approach cover design?
It's my favorite part. I have tons of covers I've designed. I buy the photos and from there I just play around with the design and font.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
The Shawshank Redemption - it's just a great amazing story
The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordan - The fear and emotion in it is so real
What do you read for pleasure?
EVERYTHING
What is your e-reading device of choice?
Kindle Fire!
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
We will see!
Describe your desk
Empty except for a lamp, laptop and photo of my favorite musician and I at a show.
