Interview with Simon Dean

What are you working on next?
I am currently working on the second installment of the Anúrth series, which will explore the people, land and customs of Tangún. It's not something that was seen a great deal in Rómorin's Rise. Writing a brand new race and culture is an exciting experience and in a fantasy world the only limit is your imagination.

I am also adding to the little extras of the Chronicles of Anúrth. Recently published as an eBook is the free novella The Chronicles of Anúrth: Origins: Volume 1. It contains five short stories describing how five of the main characters started their journeys, culminating in the epic that begins in Rómorin's Rise. The official Anúrth Facebook page contains extra information about the fantastical world of Anúrth.
Who are your favorite authors?
I have two. Firstly, Timothy Zahn. This man will hold a special place in my heart forever. He is famed for writing the Thrawn trilogy, three novels set in the aftermath of Star Wars: Episode 6. The overarching story line was itself wonderful, however it was the character development that really set Timothy apart from any other author I've read. I really do recommend his Heir to the Empire series.

Secondly, Trudi Canavan. This author has such a gifted imagination. She has written several fantasy books and created more than one world to house her ideas. Her Black Magician trilogy is addictive.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
I have two dogs, Sootie and Sweep, who keep me grounded and who need me to take them walkies!
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I am currently completing a part-time physics degree, hoping to eventually specialise in cosmology.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I am not a reader who devours everything in sight. I tend to go with authors I know, or read books that are based in a universe of which I am a fan (Star Wars, or the 41st Millennium, for example).
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
I do! I was in high school. I had only written a chapter, but I remember the effort I put into it to this day. It was again in a fantasy world. The main character had been kidnapped by vicious goblins and was being taken through a complex tunnel system. More than this, I cannot recall.
What is your writing process?
I have an overarching theme and story line, however the story and characters themselves will grow organically as I write. I do not have any detailed plan, but I do have a word document that I have which I add to every time a good idea forms in my head. I regularly refer to this when adding to the story to make sure I include the ideas I come up with that aren't necessarily part of the story at that particular time.
How do you approach cover design?
Badly! (Chortle).
What are your five favorite books, and why?
This is easy!
Heir to the Empire series
- Heir to the Empire
- Dark Force Rising
- The Last Command

The Horus Heresy series
- Horus Rising
- False Gods

I love the Heir to the Empire series because of its masterful story-telling author, Timothy Zahn, who is an expert artisan in threading different ideas together and to keep you guessing. I love a series that can still surprise you at its very end.

Horus Rising and False Gods are also very well written. Being in the mind of a superhuman Adeptus Astartes is a difficult task for mere mortals, so writing a book that also from time to time takes place from a viewpoint of a demigod is a great achievement.
What do you read for pleasure?
I read science-fiction and fantasy novels. They help keep my imagination healthy.
Describe your desk
I don't have one! I write with my laptop, whenever the mood takes me.
