Interview with Bianca Ahonen

What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
My kids. But, really, my life motivates me to get out of bed. I live in sunny California, have a job I love, 3 fantastic kids, a terrific partner, 2 sweet dogs, fabulous friends and amazing family. My life is fun!
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in the Midwest and California. We moved around a lot. I learned a deep appreciation for people, which lead to being open minded, which led to being open, which led to my illustrious career in writing erotica.
When did you first start writing?
I have always wanted to write, but could never find a story. A few years ago I had to go from being a stay at home mom to employed outside the house mom. One of the jobs I had provided me with a laptop. I was struggling financially, so I spent a lot of time at home. I was also recently divorced. A few of my friends (in similar situations) and I spent many wine soaked nights b.s.ing and over-thinking relationships, exes, and all of the men in our life. We got to talking about "the one that got away". Before I knew it, I was filling that laptop with several stories about reuniting with past loves. And, the stories just turned sexy.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I didn't have a direction initially. I had written pages of stories with no goal to publish. After a while though, I had hundreds of pages and wondered if maybe I could sell them. Cross one more thing off my bucket list.....writing and publishing a book. So, I started to research. I discovered I had 2 choices: indie publishing or submitting to a publisher. I agonized and agonized and finally decided to submit a story to each. As I prepared one story for online indie publishing and was looking into those options. Eventually, I decided to self publish. Having the control over every aspect seemed daunting at first, but it was also fun. Gratifying, too, to know I have done this myself.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
It has been having my characters do things and say things that I never would. It is so much fun to write something and pause to wonder ,"where in the world did that come from?" That has been my favorite thing. Then, after i finally got over the embarrassment and grew the courage, I had lots of fun telling all of my friends about my new "career." Their reactions have been priceless.
What do your fans mean to you?
I have always felt like a Rockstar! Fans validate that! Seriously, fans are another joy I did not expect. When someone reaches out to share their thoughts on your writing with you, it is exciting and motivating.
What's the story behind your latest book?
So far, the stories behind all of my books have a similar theme. Average "any women" who desire to be in loving, passionate relationship.....with a little kink on the side. I have been working on a few different stories, but I am waiting until I hit my stride with those before I publish them.
Describe your desk
Which one? Sometimes I write at my desktop and sometimes on my laptop. But, all my "desk" surfaces look the same: piles. I am a piler.
What is your writing process?
I write in spurts. Sometimes I am itching to put my thoughts on paper. Other times, I think, "it has been a few days since you've written anything." And I grab the laptop and start writing. I write until I am tired or out of ideas. I am lucky. I started writing with no intent to publish. So, there is no pressure. Publishing is the gravy.
How do you approach cover design?
I work closely with a graphic artist. It helps that I have known her since high school. Catholic, all girls high school. When I called her and asked her if she would be interested and what then what the genre was, she got excited and jumped right in. That motivated me to get the ball rolling. I don't usually have an idea so She throws something together and we go back and forth until we are both happy. I tend to over-think. But, once I realized I could always change the cover, it became easier to submit.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords is the motivation and key to my success. They were with me every step of the way. Lots of information to help me figure out what I was doing. And, the publishing was immediate. Well, immediate after the hours of writing, editing, researching, planning, organizing, and stressing. The immediacy and help motivated me to finish a story and publish it.
Who are your favorite authors?
Nora Roberts, Greg Isles, Lee Child, Mitch Albom, Sandra Brown to just name a few.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I love my Kindle, but have been known to read on my cell phone as well.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I look for my favorite authors. I like female authors with female characters with mystery involved so I search for that. I buy some books because they are a screaming deal. When it comes to erotica, I prefer male - female contemporary, so I browse all of that. I am all over the place when I am looking for something new to buy and read.
What do you read for pleasure?
I like romance with mystery. I like spy stuff, action adventure, and the occasional self help book.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I spend a lot of time with my people. We attend kid activities, cook, eat, drink wine, and travel near and far.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
I do. My mom saved it. I even did the cover art. It was titled, "Cat Fish". The cover had a cat sitting on a dock holding a fishing pole.......I am sure you can guess what it was about. Hopefully, I have learned some things since then.
