Interview with Ben Sixsmith

Published 2016-07-23.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Bath, in England, and enjoyed hunting round its many second-hand bookshops for the novels, plays, poems, essays and biographies that inspired me.
When did you first start writing?
I started writing when I was in Infant school, with a story in which my hand puppet terrorised my teacher.
What's the story behind your latest book?
"Champion" was inspired by Leicester winning the Premiership, and the culture of the country that surrounds it.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Creating a new world while exploring elements of ours. Spending time in someone else's head. Being read.
Who are your favorite authors?
In no particular order, and with no attempt at comprehensiveness, Melville, Gogol, Conrad, Wodehouse, Camus, Kirk, Waugh, Ballard, Houellebecq and Murakami.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Working, walking, reading, singing and spending time with the people I love.
