Interview with Bethany Macmanus

What is your writing process?
I'm an outliner. I have a paragraph written for each scene, which includes motivation, goal, and conflict, before I even type, "chapter one."
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
I remember listening to the story, The Velveteen Rabbit, and thinking it held a much more profound theme than any I'd encountered in my young years. The idea of the rabbit becoming real because the boy made it real, completely resonated with me!
How do you approach cover design?
I'm a do-it-yourself kind of lady. I did hire a model for the cover this time, but usually I buy a stock photo and just modify it myself to suit my purposes. I get a lot of compliments on my covers.
What do you read for pleasure?
If I'm not reading mystery/suspense, I like inspirational historicals, but only if there's an evil villain. hah
Describe your desk
If it's not nice and neat when I'm starting out in the morning, I get frustrated and end up piddling around for a few hours.
When did you first start writing?
Elementary school! I won a contest for my poem titled, "Where Does the Sky End?"
I began my first novel, LILY, in middle school.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I have a large support network of friends who are indies. I also like the challenge, and setting my own deadlines. Unlike most indies, I stay with the traditional marketing plan of building your author brand and platform. I'd never dream of getting into other genres; I really want to show readers what they can expect from me when they first pick up a book.
Are there any authors you idolize?
I absolutely adore Agatha Christie. I completely identify with what inspired her, how she fleshed out her characters, how she weaved in clues. Love, love, love. I wish she was still alive.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Talking about it with other writers!
What are you working on next?
Seven Sentinel's Gate, the book that comes after Six Solitude Road. I don't tend to think in series, starting out. But at the end of a novel, if there's a character begging for their story to be told, I certainly can't resist!
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Portraying the gospel of Jesus Christ through art, using the written word as my medium.
