Interview with Barbara Griffin Villemez

Published 2013-11-09.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I think most new writers in this environment find it difficult to get an agent or a publisher to read what they've labored on for so long. After many rejections I decided to publish my books independently. All of my books have been a labor of love. My favorite genre is anything paranormal and all my books have a paranormal theme or a strange twist at the end. Most of my books fall in the romantic thriller genre. the last two that I published could be called more metaphysical. The Angel Who Fell to Earth and the Dark Night of the Navajo. I'm working right now on a science fiction series and I'm having a lot of fun with it.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
I love Smashwords. They make the whole process so easy. They do everything that they can do to help your book sell.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I think the creative part of the process. I also research the information that I put in the books to be sure that it is authentic. In Dreaming Dark I researched the Minoans. In the Dead Cry for Justice I checked how the law enforcement and the Forest Rangers were organized. In the Angel Who Fell to Earth I learned about how the Jewish religion handles burials and mourns their dead. In the latest book, Dark Night of the Navajo, I have details about the Navajo traditions and their culture. And there is a thrill when someone buys the ebook or the print book and tells me how much they enjoyed the story.
What do your fans mean to you?
My fans are most important to me. Just recently I got an email from a fan that told me that I was an awesome writer and she intended to read everything I put out to the public. She had just finished reading The Angel Who Fell to Earth. Recently a male fan asked when the next book in the Cate and Mitch series was coming out. Without your fans, a writer is just a writer, nothing more. It's the people who enjoy what they read of yours that gives meaning to what you write.
What are you working on next?
I decided to try something a little different and I'm writing a science fiction series about a group of rogue aliens who crash landed on earth a hundred thousand years ago and have created chaos in human society since that time. Another group from the same planet has entered the earth plane to destroy these aliens. They are the Daughters of Light and they incarnate on the planet. The first book in the series is finished and I'm waiting on the editing from my writer's group and then will publish. The series is called The Ceran Conspiracy, Book One: Kiss Me, Love Me, Kill Me.
Who are your favorite authors?
That's a hard one to answer. Most of the authors who add a metaphysical or paranormal twist to their stories and I also like historical fiction.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
I live in the Land of Enchantment, New Mexico. Our days are beautiful for the most part, our winters are mild and one can sometimes wear shorts in the winter. Being outside, watching the birds and animals, the beautiful blue sky and my loving and supportive husband are many of the reasons for me to hop out of bed to meet the day with enthusiasm.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
There is hardly a time when I'm not writing. In the hours when I'm away from the computer, I'm either outside or doing the chores that one has to do in order to have a semi-organized life. My husband and our four cats take up most of my free time.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I read the book section of the New York Times. Friends recommend books to me.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes, it was a short story titled "Mama's Things". It won honorable mention in a Writer's Digest Writing Competition. I've added it to a short story compilation that I will be publishing to Smashwords before the end of the month.
What is your writing process?
Good question. I don't know if I have an actual process. Usually I get an idea and go from there. Sometimes the idea comes from something I've read or a conversation I've had with someone. Sometimes it may come from a newspaper article. I usually start writing on a legal pad with sharpened pencils. And I usually have a glass of wine sitting on a side table to give me inspiration. My experiences in life have been varied. I had a private psychotherapy practice for many years working mostly with women so some of the short stories come from those experiences. I also taught at various universities as well as owned my own businesses. Once I put my ideas on paper then I transfer to the computer and start writing the story.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
That's another difficult question. I've been a reader all my life. In fact even now I prefer a book to television and hardly ever turn it on. I started reading simple children's book when I was three years old. First my mother read to me then I wanted to read the words myself, so I learned how from my mother reading to me. My mother said I was a precocious and difficult child at times. I remember as a teenager, she would have to make me put what I was reading down and practically push me out the door. As a teenager I read historical fiction, especially about ancient times. those were my favorites at that time then I went on to science fiction. I was shy and introverted so I came alive reading.
How do you approach cover design?
I have someone who does that for me, Laura Shinn. We agree on the cover and she takes care of it.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
Bruce Catton's trilogy about the civil war because I was brought up in the south and had ancestors who died in the war on both sides.
A trilogy on world war 2 about the bombing of Pearl Harbor. The second book in the trilogy, Tora, Tora, Tora was made into a movie. My father fought in that war.
The stories of science fiction writer Isaac Asimov because anything about other worlds fascinates me.
All of the books on Edgar Casey, the sleeping prophet because I believe what was written about him
All good writers of historical fiction because they give a different take on what one learns in school.
What do you read for pleasure?
Historical fiction, romantic thrillers, mysteries, action and adventure. Actually whatever happens to strike my fancy at the time.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
Right now I have a kindle, but thinking also about an ipad.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
I have over a hundred emails that I send out and now I have a website, http://www.wickedwomenpress.com that has gone up recently. I've had good feedback about the site. I'm also on twitter, facebook. headliner, pinterest, linkedin and have a wordpress blog, Thinking Out Loud. They all have contributed to sales.
Describe your desk
Actually have two desks that are in utter chaos.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
Spent a good part of my youngest life on an island off the coast of Charleston, SC until my dad entered the military then we traveled all over the world. Seeing other countries, experiencing other cultures widens one's thinking and perceptions.
When did you first start writing?
I've written off and on most of my life, but didn't start professionally until about ten years ago.
What's the story behind your latest book?
Interested in Native American history. I found out that I'm 1/16th Blackfoot. Went up to the reservation, did research and then to the Navajo Nation for a week to research for this book, Dark Night of the Navajo.
What are your next projects?
I have a compilation of short stories titled Tales Beyond the Veil that I will be publishing sometime in the month of November as well as the science fiction series, The Ceran Conspiracy. The first book in that series is finished and I will publish it when the editing is finished. I've started on the second book in the series. After the first of the year I hope to start on a novel that I've been thinking about for months. It will take a lot of research and I've started some of it. This novel will take place in the future and the world will be a different place.
