Interview with B.E. Harvey

Published 2014-05-08.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
The book which has had the biggest influence on me was Hinds Feet on High Places and its sequel Mountain of Spices. I love allegories! These two books by Hannah Hurnard have had great impact on who I am as a person and my faith.
How do you approach cover design?
I think about what I really want people to get from my writing. For instance with Volume One of the Jouneys series I wanted to display several things. First, a parent is responsible for their children journey in education. However, it is the child's journey too. The cover depicts this sentiment.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I love reading on my Nook HD. It is easy to hold and balance.
Describe your desk
My desk was a birthday gift from my Mom and sister Angie. It is a large glass desk. The frame and legs are chrome. There is a glass shelf on top for my monitor and a pullout for my keyboard. I love the large glass surface which allows me room for editing and my research.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
My first tweleve years I lived as an Army Brat. Born in Japan I lived on four of the seven continents before we settled in St.Louis, MO. I guess this is one reason I focus so much of my writing on parenting and young children. I loved that part of my life.
What's the story behind your latest book?
I wrote Volume One because I heard President Obama and others talking about quality child care or preschool. Yet many people I spoke with had no real idea what that means. I wanted to write a quick read which would also be an easy read. My goal is to help everyone get a good and quick grasp on what quality child care is and what it looks like.
What motivated you to become an Indie writer?
After submitting my book to several publishers and getting turned down I knew I wanted to self-publish. I like Smashwords for that reason and also because the book is available worldwide.
What are you working on next?
The next book I am working on is Volume 2 of the Journeys series. This book is for parents of children still in the early childhood phase of life. It focuses on Kindergarten to Third Grade. I am focusing on coaching parents in the move to Elementary School.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I still work in the Early Childhood and Parent Education fields. I teach classes, attend seminars, and work with volunteets and staff. In my leisure time I read, hang out with friends, tweet, facebook, and watch the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills and Atlanta.
