Interview with Karina McRoberts

There are millions of books to choose from online. Why should I choose yours?
For less than the cost of a cup of coffee, I am providing you with entertainment, enlightenment, hope, joy, empathy, mystery, romance, adventure…Many of the things missing in everyday life!
What better investment can you make? And what better thing can I offer?
What about sales and popularity? You haven't scored very high in either department. How do I know you're any good?
As you've said, there are millions of books to choose from. You have perhaps realised that plenty of what's available is pure junk. Quality does not necessarily equate with high sales. In any case, those who get noticed have lots of friends, family, and important connections. I unfortunately have few of these. Of course I do believe whole-heartedly that my stories are good, because they offer all the things I've mentioned above in Question One! I need to build a following so my books will become noticeable. So, why not give me a chance? It costs you next to nothing to give another human being a bit of a leg-up in the world. So, why not?
What other benefits can I get from buying your books?
I like to interact with my readers. You are getting a more "personalised" service, not just a book. I will correspond with you, even help you to become a writer if you desire. I don't charge anything to help someone where I can. Online, or at of the many workshops I give each year.
I also like to give proceeds of my book sales to charity. Right now I am working to create a hygiene and paediatric nursing scholarship for indigenous girls in remote communities.
Tell me more about your "personalised" service.
You've taken an interest in me and my stories; I like reciprocate. I am often able to create cameo roles in the stories I write. You may like to see yourself as a character in one of my books. Or perhaps your child or grandchild would enjoy this.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Sharing something wonderful with readers! The link between myself as creator, people and things from my life, from history, from anywhere and everywhere, and the person reading my book.
What do your fans mean to you?
A great deal! If I don't know people are enjoying what I write, I don't know if I am succeeding in my aim to provide people with hope, inspiration, joy, pathos, thrills, empathy, education, entertainment; all manner of things I aim for!
What are you working on next?
A rest. :) Well yes, but I am near to finishing a novella, in the comic fantasy genre.
Describe your desk
Eclectic. Busy. And a bit messy; probably a reflection of my mind. I'm usually way outside the square. Also. I have favourite sayings to keep me inspired. One is: Tales of the imagination tend to upset those without one. Terry Pratchett.
What's the story behind your latest book?
"The Mine's Eye" is my latest book, sequel to "The Palace of the Stars".

This is a time-travel story with several differences from the usual. It's not about what happens - the events. Well it is, but more importantly, it's how the characters deal with what happens.

There are complex characters. And real history in the historical fiction component. With that, I focus on what history was like for real, everyday, and not so everyday people. Not just the famous and the dates and the big events. Not just the "grand parade of human endeavour". There is so much more to tell!
Why do you write in these genres - fantasy and historical fiction?
I love them. Always have. I like to escape when I read, and provide escape to my readers. Gothic Victoriana has always been a favourite of mine. What a fascinating period of history!. I trained as a scientist, so I go for the, shall we say, more macabre aspects of this time period. As for fantasy, I just love good epic fantasy. I created Galla Jernari because I wanted a female hero in my stories. I also wanted to help myself to deal with the plethora of natural disasters and racial bigotry I found myself surrounded by at the time, so although the Chelandra series is classic epic fantasy in one sense, it has very relevant modern overtones.
