Interview with Becca St. John

Describe your desk
My great-grandfather, a cabinet maker from France, made my desk. The same desk is featured on my Facebook page with my great-grandmother sitting there writing. It's a very special place for me. One of the only pieces of furniture I requested when my mother passed away. As one of the youngest of six children I'm still baffled that it is actually mine.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
Hemmingway, Edgar Rice Burroughs, Richard Bach and I grew-up in the same Chicago suburb. Hemmingway called it a town of wide lawns and narrow minds but it wasn't the place so much as being from a large, dramatic family that inspired my writing. Marriage to an Englishman, and living in a country steeped in history, set the stage for those stories.
When did you first start writing?
As with most writers, writing has always been a part of my life. When young there were diaries and letters (yes, I'm of the letter writing age) and angst filled poetry. In college my essays received recognition and I earned a bit of extra cash writing articles, even produced my own plays but never considered being an author. A voracious reader, reading inspired me to write, to create my own worlds.
What do your fans mean to you?
I LOVE my readers! Their enthusiasm and support inspire me. You see, I don't publish to be published. I publish to share stories that I love. When someone enjoys my work then we share a common sense of fun and adventure. My readers are a treat, the absolute icing on the cake.
What are you working on next?
THE PROTECTOR is my next project, due for release the winter of 2013/2014. Raised by a society of healers disbanded and condemned as witches, Veri is forced to hide what she holds most dear, her talent to heal. Unaware of the nature of Veri’s vulnerability, an embittered knight, Sir Roland, vows to give her a home, a name and his protection. Trained in herbs Veri soon realizes Roland's wounds are far deeper than those of the flesh. Together they walk a perilous path.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
This is a tough question as there are so many books I cherish - The Time Traveler's Wife, Water for Elephants, Flowers in the Storm, Life of Pi, Ishmael -all carry me into a different world, stretch me to think in new ways. But I haven't added any by Jayne Ann Krentz, which is wrong. Every time I sit down to one of her books I know I will have a good time.
What do you read for pleasure?
Romance is my escape, my little pleasure. Oddly enough, though, romantic movies or tv don't draw me the way a good mystery does.
