Interview with Ben Coleman

What do you read for pleasure?
I like to keep abreast of current affairs. In the good ole days that meant a newspaper, but these days it mostly consists of your news feed on Facebook. I fancy fiction writing most of all, though historical biographies are also a favorite. And of course history books of all kinds and any period. But never instructions, no instructions of any kind. I'm a guy, we're genetically disposed to not read instructions, ever.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I don't have one. I read paper books. Just haven't gotten with the times yet I guess.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
SMASHWORDS OF COURSE!
Describe your desk
Messy and chaotic. That way I know where everything is, the way a search and rescue dog knows where people are after a tornado.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
Born in northwest Arkansas, but spent many formative teenage years in Springfield, Mo. If I call any place a home town it'd probably be Springfield. Running the streets half feral gave me a lot of life experience to draw on, so there's that.
When did you first start writing?
About six years ago professionally. Of course it takes a few years to really break into the business, develop contacts and so on.
What's the story behind your latest book?
Latest book is a civil war romance. In a nutshell it's about two powerful men of different backgrounds who come to desire the same woman, and begin a personal war of vendetta against the backdrop of the greater war consuming the country.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
Well back in the day you had to get the attention of a publishing house and nail down a contract, which could take a mighty long time. So it was a collision of time and opportunity, what with the breakthrough's we've had in social media. Now a day's you've got the medium to just write, and throw it to the wolves and see if anybody bites. It's the fans, really that determine your success, without the middle man of some editor in a New York Publishing house making that decision for you, and the public.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Just started so I can't honestly render an opinion yet. But I'll definitely be recommending if it turns out well!
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Creating worlds.
What do your fans mean to you?
Without them, I am a lonely being, creating worlds that no one shall ever see.

1775 and a desperate war for freedom has begun. But another war is about to be fought; a war in the shadows. The Freemasons and rivals the Illuminati are entering into a battle for control.
