Interview with Benjamin Nemopode

How long have you been writing? (Depuis combien de temps écrivez vous?)
Many years now, about twenty I would say, but thirty if i really count, at first like a need to keep memory of my thoughts ( a writer feels when his thoughts are interesting or even valuable), then at the age of 27, a first nover Voyage(s) came to me in French as I was living in London and had bought my first personnal pc, running with Windows 95... for 80 £.
Then a second novel arrived in Montreal, Passage in 2002.
Writing is not my decision, it is a lot more subtil than that. It is a way to find the heavens. The heavens are in the mind first.
I think I am writing under influence of the Gods.
And I think that my writing influence my life, a lot of things in my life.
So, let us say that I am living under influence.
How do you discover the ebooks you read ? ( Comment trouver vous les livres que vous lisez ?)
This is a very strange thing: how books come into someone's life. By chance, by luck, by destiny. Sychronicities with books you know what I mean... You need some at a time, and they arrive by chance. Sometimes I go to a library and I just feel guided to the ones I finally find. Books are immortal in a way. The Argentin writer, Jorge Luis Borges felt the same kind of thinks about books and their powers. He is a Kind of a friend for me, through time and texts. Carl Gustav Jung the Swiss psychologist too, friend too.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
It was two deseperate lines, not really good, but containing a lot about who I was.
They said:
Mais que faire du temps, il n'est qu'absence, il n'est qu'errance, je ne veux plus vivre sur terre, je ne veux plus de cet enfer...
What is your writing process?
