Interview with Bernadette Rowley

Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
I remember the first fantasy story I ever read. It was Sword of Shannara by Terry Brooks. This epic high fantasy was full of danger and strange creatures and magic. I was totally hooked. The fact that the story was a trilogy meant I could live in that world with those characters for an extended period. Ever since then, I've loved fantasy and series- the longer the better!
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in the Sunshine Coast hinterland in Queensland, Australia. It was a rural lifestyle especially in high school and I trained and rode my horses every spare moment. Horses feature strongly in my stories and in The Lady's Choice, Benae is very close to her stallion. It's a special relationship like the one I had with my horse Captain. I also remember a childhood full of imaginative games. My sister and I used to pretend we were female Texas rangers whether we were in the pool or on our bikes. I was always drawn to horses whether it be in moves, books or real life.
When did you first start writing?
I've written all my life but I started seriously learning the craft after I had my last child in 1998. I started in picture books and worked by way through junior fiction to science fiction and then finally fantasy romance. In 2007, I started taking writing seriously and had my first book published in 2012.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The greatest joy of writing comes from sharing my stories and knowing I have touched someone. I also love introducing fantasy novices to the genre.
What do you read for pleasure?
I read a lot of romance for pleasure. I find that as I get older, my attention span is getting shorter. Romance is perfect for that quick fix of escapism. I enjoy historical romance and also contemporary set in exotic locations like Italy.
Who are your favorite authors?
My favourite authors are Robert Jordan (The Wheel of Time series), JK Rowling (Harry Potter series), and Marie Force.
Describe your desk
My desk is a mess. It sits in my bedroom with a bookshelf of my favourite fantasy and romance books beside it. Usually, my desk is covered with laptop, filing system of all my manuscripts, sketches of my fantasy world, notebooks and timelines for all my books. I wish it could be neat but in the end it doesn't really matter!
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I read on a Kobo and now prefer this to print books. It's light and simple to use. I can read in the car which I've not been able to do with print books.
How do you approach cover design?
For my covers, I have an inherent idea of how they will look and I give my designer a short brief and then let her create. The result is a real partnership between author and designer. Princess Avenger is the first in a series of at least three books and I was lucky enough to get a series of shots with the same model. I love them all!
What motivated you to become an indie author?
Princess Avenger was first published traditionally but not promoted as it needed to be. My publisher didn't understand fantasy and didn't have a global focus. When I got the rights back, I decided to self publish the two books I had with that publisher as well as the rest of the Princess Avenger trilogy. I have two other titles coming out with Pan Macmillan's Australian imprint, Momentum, this year. They're set in the same fantasy world. Being an Indie author is exciting and I like the idea of having control over my works.
