Interview with Beth Sadler

When did you first start writing?
I've always written; as a young girl it was angst ridden poetry in the back of my school books. Now, I laugh at that poor girl who thought she was writing stuff to rival Keats and Shelley. I'm much more realistic now, and accept that although my work isn't 'War and Peace' it is at least entertaining.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I realised that Ebooks were the way of the future. I wanted to get in on the ground floor and be accessible to a wide new audience. Also, the reject slips stopped arriving in the mail from the print media which was a really big bonus.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords have given me the opportunity to showcase my work and given me the tools to create the Ebook format. Without Smashwords I would still be sitting at my desk wondering where I'd gone wrong. Smashwords introduced me to my readers and are directly responsible for the lovely encouraging emails I get from them.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Creating a story in my mind and having it come alive and live in my heart and the heart's of my readers. My characters live if people identify with them. What a joy.
What do your fans mean to you?
My fans are the reason I get up every morning and write. Without their feedback and encouragement my characters and story lines can't live on.
What are you working on next?
A full length novel set in Australia and Africa. Hopefully the hero will obey me and show my heroine just how strong and resourceful he can be when the going gets tough and dangerous.
Who are your favorite authors?
Jayne Ann Krentz, Linda Howard and Elizabeth Lowell. If I could write even half as well as they do, I'd be a very happy camper.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
My readers, and the next part of the story that is waiting to speak to me.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Backpacking around the world to interesting place when I get time. At home I live on acreage where I broke and trained horses for many years. I'm now waiting to see if my grandchildren show any interest before I take on Pony Club again. My son's were brilliant horsemen but, walked away from it all when they discovered girls and subsequently families of their own. I've got my fingers crossed that at least one grandchild shows interest.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I simply troll through the catalogue at Smashwords and buy in the romance category. If I find an author that I like then, I keep going back to them.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes--It was all about a wild horse that I loved and trained. Predictable eh?
What is your writing process?
An interesting idea pops into my head and then I simply sit down and write until the story becomes clear. Lots of re-writing goes on in the early stages. However, I feel it is important for me to keep working and be disciplined about putting the time in.
How do you approach cover design?
I try and link the cover to some aspect of the storyline. I take lots of photos then ask my husband which one he likes best, he has a better eye than me for what looks good. I once deleted a whole day's hard work because it just didn't work; his "That one's OK I guess" was the kiss of death to that project.
What do you read for pleasure?
What is your e-reading device of choice?
Anything that I can get my hands on with a story on it.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Free Books with Smashwords
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
No, however I do remember reading "The Thirty-Nine Steps" by John Buchan, when I was around eleven years old. I couldn't stop reading until I reached the end. Also, in my twenties, I read Ayn Rand's "Atlas Shrugged." To this day, I still feel it is the most powerful book I've ever read other than the Bible. It is particularly relevant in today's GFC.
Describe your desk
I have two desks. One is a contemporary work horse, made out of sleek timber laminate that houses two computers, a printer and all the other essentials of writing.
However, the desk that holds my heart and where I create my imaginary worlds, is an old, solid timber, six drawer kneehole type that I bought second hand many years ago. I spent days refinishing it, sanding it back and covering the top in burgundy coloured faux leather. When I gazed on its new magnificence, I thought that now I could be a real writer, because, after all, I had a real desk. Oh how I deceived myself.
This is the desk where I eventually created the 'Teeron' series, 'Twisted Dreams', 'Freedom' and also the three children's books.
Last year my lovely brother built me a new office at the back of my house, with two huge windows for me to enjoy the view over my land as I work. I used the new, sleek, contemporary desk to create 'Warrior Hearts and 'Deadly Secrets'
What's the story behind your upcoming book?
Bella Mills,And Klim Darl are on an adventure in the Daintree Rainforest. The Daintree is in Queensland, Australia and is the oldest rainforest on Earth, so it's the perfect place to set a mystery. The story line involves an extinct dolphin species, fossils and hidden aboriginal cave paintings, as well as a love story to make your heart sing. I hope it takes my readers to a happy place.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
I don't have 5 favourite books, however I do have several favourite genre's. I love Romantic Suspense because there are always happy endings--I like to feel good when I finish a book. I also enjoy Mysteries as, I like to solve problems. I think my favourite book, growing up was Atlas Shrugged, by Ayn Rand. She was a very deep thinker and way ahead of her time, politically. I read the news now and see how what she wrote about as fiction, is actually coming about. Of course my favourite as a child was Black Beauty, that book influenced the rest of my life. I couldn't wait to grow up and buy my first horse, which was the start of a lifetime of horse ownership and living on acreage. I'm proud to say that, that passion influenced my sons too, who all grew up to be brilliant riders--- much better than their mother.
What's the story behind your latest book?
This book was exciting for me to write because it answers all the questions about the Teeron origins. I haven't decided if it will be the last book in the series, but just in case it is, I didn't want to leave my readers hanging. I was ready to discover the truth behind Hera's legend and imagined my readers were too.
