Interview with Barbra Newcomb

Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in northern Iowa in a small town. Living in a town with a dying mall and not a lot to do made reading a very large part of my life. Books became this whole other world for me and it was amazing it definitely helped me want to create those world's for other's the way the books I had read created them for me. A lot of the short stories I have written are based around small towns but as I have gotten older and began actually experiencing and living in a much larger world my writings have began to include larger city life as well, but I like to keep my writing with what I know best and that's living in the sticks!
When did you first start writing?
I started writing poetry in middle school and shortly after I wrote a children's book, which my mom just loved! Through high school I wrote short stories for class and on my own and continued my love into college where I developed my writing skills for more traditional jobs, however, I never lost the itch to create an entirely different world and get lost in it.
What's the story behind your latest book?
My latest book was developed after several failed attempts at other stories. I just couldn't fall in love with the characters of the other books and so they never developed fully. One day this idea just hit me and the whole story just fell into my lap. I loved my characters and am enjoying getting to know them better as I write further into the series.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I was unsure about the traditional route. I have a real published writers in my life and some have had great things to say while others have not enjoyed the struggle. I liked that with the indie route I was able to control how the book was written/edited. I wanted to control the way the story came across and let the words come out unbidden. I have loved reading all of the wonderful indie authors out there and honestly I wanted to be in the club!
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords was easy to use, incredibly comprehensive and I loved that I didn't have to change my writing for them to publish me!
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Writing for me is an escape to another place. I love my life but it's so much fun to be in the shoes of a God or a warrior or a princess. It's so amazing to be able to come up with characters out of your head and watch them come to life on paper!
What are you working on next?
I have several book outlines ready to go as well as the second book in the series Prophecy of the Deus. I'm incredibly excited to see what happens with all of the ideas I have spinning around in my head!
Who are your favorite authors?
I have to say I am really into indie authors now including Rachel Higginson and Lila Felix. I also love the classics Charles Dickens and Jane Eyre, along with modern writers Kiera Cass and Shelly Crane. I obviously have a thing for strong lady writers haha!

We were Gods in a world among humans. Stories told of us were called myth and legend. Those that believed faith had even called us Angels. We have lived among the humans since the dawn of time. Since the beginning we have waited. I've trained since I was a child. Now at 584 years old I am dangerous. I am lethal. And I am ready. I am Phyre.
