Interview with Charles James

What qualifies you to write a book about Chess?
I have played Chess and taught Chess for much of my life. The reason for writing "Building Up To Chess" was that I could not find a really good book for beginners.
What's the story behind your latest book?
The "Build Up For Chess" book is a project that has been building for years. I thought I had finished it in 2011 but revisiting this year before publication I have made a few slight improvements.

The "Don Hewson" series started as one novel. The theme was how this eccentric Yorkshire foster carer transforms the lives of "his" children. The characters were so strong that the writing continued to flow. After ten novels I am now in modern times. The foster children are becoming young adults, building careers, and falling in love.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up first in Vancouver Canada and then in Staines England. Coming to England at the age of ten from the relatively classless society of Canada I found social class a very odd concept.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
With fiction I love the development of the people. I know they are characters but to me they are people. I had a heck of a shock when I bumped into a Dennis Wilkins lookalike in a shop in Yorkshire.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
A recognition that whether traditional or indie I have to do my own marketing. With e-publishing I can still serve the market,
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords provides a terrific platform.
What are you working on next?
I write a lot of political pieces for Left publications in Britain like "The Word" and "Prole-Star".

I have my own web site www.charlesjames.name.

The current big project is preparing the Third Edition of a textbook I wrote on the Law of Packaging and Labelling.
Who are your favorite authors?
Paul Gallico, Bernard Cornwell, and thriller writers.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I now live on a small farm in Portugal. There is usually something that needs doing.
Do you like Don Hewson?
I think Don Hewson is best admired from afar.
