Interview with Robert Thompson

Published 2016-11-15.
What do you read for pleasure?
I am an eclectic reader, in that I read a wide variety of subjects, today. However, I am a child of my generation. I started off reading comic books at the grocery store, when they had them on the stands just for kids like myself, and used my allowance and money I made mowing lawns to by current issues. I then went into Science Fiction and read the great authors Heinlein, Clark, Asimov, Bradbury, Herbert, and so many more. Today I am an engineer and read so nay Code books, and healthcare articles. But still find time for the leisure read to settle the brain, and use it to paint the picture that reading allows us to make as we see a story unfold as we read.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I use my Tablet and my Galaxy Note 3, OK I heard the gasp on the Samsung Note 3 being an old device. But it is very portable and has good access to e-books. When I travel I find I just need the Note and after I download a book, its an easy reading device for me.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Still new, still trying, and sold some books. So its still a learning process and a work in progress.
Describe your desk
My primary desk is a wood plank on my recliner, I set my laptop up with my remote keyboard and remote mouse and have at it. The other place is on the back deck of my boat, which is great as long as its a nice day outside.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
My web page tells a portion of my story. I was born in Springfield Missouri, and shortly after that we moved to Los Gatos California. My dad started off as a Ranch manager for one of the big fruit companies, so I had fun going to Santa Cruz, going to camp in Big Basin redwoods. We then moved to Sacramento where we have a lot of family and I finished Elementary, Junior High, and High School there. My female cousins can be found in my books, as well as other members of the family. In that they are strong and loving family who I miss all the time. Their characters are used but not totally based on my book characters. I went into the Navy and while living in Italy for about 4 years with the Navy, yes in Gaeta Italy, I used a number of the countries and towns I visited while I was in the service. While in the Navy I was in the Great Lakes Naval Drill team, and my roommate was a Seal, a very normal looking person and the stories always got my attention. So to me its a mix bag of friends, family, places, and experiences that all have an affect on my writing.
When did you first start writing?
I did some poetry when I was in Junior High, but the trash you get from others, can kill that desire, which it did. I re-took up writing as an expression to get out of a low part in my life. And this was after reading a story from another author named Bob L. which reminded me of my cousins, and my family who were on the other coast. Once I sat down and started putting words down, the story flowed through my mind. And so it began.
What's the story behind your latest book?
Being a Navy person, and not being able to get into the Seals, I think it was a nagging want that I kind of wanted to try. And is still a missing part of me. So I had a long weekend, in a depressive mood, and wondering about life in general,. and after reading a story that helped pass some tme, I thought about just setting down my life and experiences. So I did, and I re-read what I put down, and realized the many celebrations I had in life, the places I was able to go to, and experiences that many people would wish they had the opportunity to do. My cousin Sharon, who is like a sister to me and who I grew up with, helped me settle my mind and from her, I decided to try writing the book series I have today. And that was book 1.
What motivated you to become a Fiction author?
For me its easier to make up things that could actually happen, both from a technological perspective, and a people perspective. And I work with facts and figures and codes every day. Fiction allows me/us to go to another world, colored a different color, and made up of people who we want to be with, what better medium to be in.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
As a new author, its a little daunting to figure out how to get a book out there. An author I was reading, was on Smashwords and so I took a look. I found help there to start with an easy path to get a work out there, and soon realized that it does not take a fortune to get a book out, Copyright to IBN number, formatting to having a place to find my book.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Story development. I have a book that starts with the characters, where they are from, how old they are, how much do they weigh, how tall are they. Each team is broken out and their jobs, as well as where they are stationed. I then chose where the story will develop, look at the town or city, the highways, possible locations for houses and bases, even down to the cafes and hotels that may be used. From that, choosing how the story begins and plot the path all the way to the finish. I re-read my story continually adjusting and try to make sure the continuity is intact. I just enjoy the process.
What do your fans mean to you?
Its means a lot... It means that as they grow in number, i got the message across. They told someone, and they got the book. And so it goes...
What are you working on next?
The second book in the series, brings in a very intelligent young lady "Bonnie", a consulate team who get kidnapped, and a very rough group of terrorist who enjoy making Americans suffer. Lots of action and fast paced. I would say a complete 180 from the first book.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
I actually enjoy what I do. The decisions made everyday can affect so many lives and at times it can be intense with people in Surgery, or recovering from illness. For every life coming into the world or recovering and are able to go home, its always a win.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Working on my boat. A 36 foot Trojan cabin cruiser. Drawing, I am presently doing a series on Mothers and Daughters. And helping my Granddaughter, who has more artistic talent than me and I am envious of her. I have worked in theater in the past and I am looking to get involved with some of the groups in the area.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
friends and family as well as just looking through the books.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes, poetry. Of course being younger and the Viet Nam era a lot of war, peace and wish for a girlfriend stuff.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
There are so many, but Podkayne of Mars, comes to mind. They all have had an affect, and I can not say that any one author had more impact than another. They all did.
How do you approach cover design?
I work with a great cover artist, She listens to what I am trying to portray and she delivers a great cover.
