Interview with Amanda Anderson

What do you read for pleasure?
Anything really. It depends on time. I like a good short read with a lot of action, but if I know I will have some down time, I like something more involved like Lord of The Rings.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I have the Kindle app on my phone. I like it because I always have it with me and I always have something on there to read. I don't do well with boredom.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
I have found that keeping things simple works for me. I try to tweet my books and post them to facebook to keep interest up. I also send out a newsletter to those who are interested in the latest news on what I am doing.
Describe your desk
Well, that's sort of a joke at my house. My desk is mobile. It's my laptop and what ever room feels the most inspiring. I may pile up in my recliner or in bed. I just can't do the sitting at a desk for hours thing.
When did you first start writing?
I first started a few years ago. I had no idea it would lead to a career. I had a dream that wouldn't leave me alone, just an idea of a story in the back of my head. I sat down with a pen and a notebook and after several notebooks and several packs of pens, I decided to type it out and see what I could do with it. I ended up publishing it through amazon.com and I couldn't stop. It was like someone had opened the floodgates. I have since quit my teaching job to stay home and write. I couldn't be happier.
What's the story behind your latest book?
My latest book is one in a series that started out as almost a joke. The series is about a group of bikers and the women who love them and as you might imagine, there are struggles. The first book was started because a friend wanted me to make a character around the name he used as his gamer tag. So I created this tough guy with tattoos and an attitude problem, but the story quickly took a turn and became about the son he'd left behind. Shadow was written. Now I am starting book 12 of the series and I am just floored by how readers have responded to the series. I'm just so thankful for such amazing readers, they make all this so rewarding.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I admit, I did try the traditional route, but it was so overwhelming! The crushing weight of rejection and trying to find the motivation to try again and again when it feels that no one sees any value in your work. When I did get to actually talk to a publisher they seemed to want so many rights to my work that it wasn't even mine. The story they wanted barely resembled the one I had fallen in love with. Yes, maybe I could have made more money with them, but that isn't really what it's about.
In the end I decided to keep my stories the way they are, flawed perhaps, but mine.
What do your fans mean to you?
They mean the world to me! There is nothing like dragging out of bed after staying up way too late at the computer to find and email or even a facebook post saying how much a reader loved a book. It makes the hard work worth it. There are times when a bad review gets me down or someone is just nasty, but the good readers far outweigh the bad and I try to learn from the bad comments. There is always room for improvement and I owe that to the readers who show consistent loyalty and care. I have some who take the time to write reviews and tell their friends and that is just huge to me. I can't say enough about these awesome people who make this crazy writing thing I do matter and mean something real.
What are you working on next?
I am currently working on a few things. I am always working on the next Defenders MC book, but I am playing with a young adult series and a more traditional romance novel. My daughter who is thirteen wants me to write something that she can read and as a mom I want to give her that, don't we all. I am not sure when it will be ready, but so far it is fun.
I am also working on a shifter series that I hope to release near the end of the year. I will keep you posted on that on. It is going to be a scorcher!
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I'm a mom. I spend my time with my husband, kids, the cat, and out two dogs. We are a very spontaneous group so we may jump in the car and take a road trip or just stay home. While everyone is off at school and work, I spend my time walking or swimming to get my mind good and awake. Then I spend a few hours with whatever story wants to get out the most.
There are days when I just can't seem to get anything good down on paper. Those days I read. I think it is very important for an author to read. Others have unique ideas and styles that help an author grow. It's also important to find a few authors to connect with, the support is really helpful at times when you feel stuck. It happens.
What is your writing process?
I am a mess. I have a really hard time with outlines with some stories. I just want to write the book! I do make myself create an outline even if it is very basic and even if I may change it as I go along. It is good for me to have an end goal and work toward it or I will lose focus and ramble. Some books are typed right out on the computer, but some need more care and are written in notebooks. These tend to be my favorites honestly. I can take them anywhere and they tend to take a lot longer and more thought than those that flow right out on the computer.
So I guess my style depends on a few factors. The topic, my goal for the book, time, and the feel I have for the characters. It can go from very organized to extremely disorganized, but it all makes sense to me.
