Interview with Monica Lynne Foster

Who are your favorite authors?
I have several favorite authors. Many who have inspired me for years. I'd have to say that at the top of my list, I really enjoy reading Victoria Christopher Murray, Reshonda Tate Billingsley, and Kimberla Lawson Roby. I love how they have series that I'm able to follow. I begin to feel like I know their characters!
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
I enjoy life! I'm the co-founder of a woman's organization called Women Who Run Their World. Our vision is to: Encourage, Inspire, and Support Our Sisters on Our Journey to Live Our Lives on Our Terms. I believe that we all have just one life to live and we should spend our time doing the things that bring us joy and happiness. I love spending time with my family, running my business with my husband, traveling, reading, and of course writing!
Describe your desk
Hmmm, we'll call it controlled chaos! I know where everything is, but others might have difficulty! LOL
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
Well, I have my favorite authors and I like to review the suggestions that pop up on the screen when I'm on their pages.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Actually I do. I was about 7 years old and wrote a 4 page story called Charlie and the Dunce. That was over 35 years ago so while the particulars of my story are a little fuzzy, what I remember most is the fact that my family supported me. I remember reading my story to them and receiving praise for my work. In hindsight, I have no idea if my writing was any good, but that was a defining moment for me. I fell in love with writing and embracing my very active imagination!
What is your writing process?
I like to call myself a visual writer. I see my writing as scenes in my mind's eye, so I literally close my eyes and visualize what my characters are doing in that moment. And then I write what I see.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
Right now, my favorite books, besides my own, are the Rachel and Jasmine series that are co-authored with Reshonda Tate Billingsley and Victoria Christopher Murray. I love the chemistry between the characters. They are like women I know and yet they're slightly over the top.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I usually read books on my Kindle app on my iPad.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The greatest joy of writing for me is twofold. I love the sound of my fingers tapping on the keyboard. And I love the creative process. When I write, my imagination gets to go on an adventure. The entire process is liberating and relaxing for me.
What do your fans mean to you?
Fans are everything! I write because I enjoy it and I want to share with others. I hope that the break from reality that I feel when I'm writing, is the same break from reality that my fans get to enjoy when they're reading.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I'm a self professed workaholic! For me, there is no difference between my work and my play, because to me I am always doing both? My husband and I own a gas contracting business, which takes up a lot time. But it's enjoyable. I'm also the co-founder of Naturally You, a natural hair and body products company. So, I spend a lot of time working on my businesses or doing my version of relaxation with family and friends.
What do you read for pleasure?
I enjoy reading the same genre that I enjoy writing, chick lit or women's fiction. I love novels that have adult content, yet don't make me blush when I'm reading! And I really enjoy a good series. When I've read a great book, I'm usually want more!
What are you working on next?
I'm currently working on the third book in the Chanelle Series, For Better And For Worse. Readers have asked to know more about Chanelle's ride or die best friend, Michele. In For Better And For Worse, the reader goes inside the personal life of Michele as she deals with marital ups and downs while someone very close to her is on trial for murder.
What's the story behind your latest book?
My latest novel, Hands Off My Man, is about the main character in my Chanelle Series. Chanelle finally has what she thinks is her dream life. She can feel her marriage proposal in the air. And then his ex, who just happens to suffer from a mental illness, pops onto the scene. How does she fight for her man, when the woman she's battling with is unstable? It's a great read with fun characters and ending you just might not see coming...
