Interview with Valery Faye

Who are your favorite authors?
Margaret Atwood, George Saunders, Ralph Ellison, Octavia Butler, and Vladimir Nabokov
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Programming, coding, video gaming, ballroom dancing, or having an existential quarter-life crisis.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
I can't remember what it was about, but it was definitely written on construction paper or notebook paper bound by hair barrettes.
What is your writing process?
Lol, I wish I knew.
What are your five favorite books?
A Tale for the Time Being - Ruth Ozeki. (BEST BOOK EVER.)
Oryx and Crake - Margaret Atwood (One of the very few novels I've read more than once.
Lolita - Vladimir Nabokov (Pure art)
Invisible Man - Ralph Ellison (Scarily, still relevant today)
Maus I and II - Art Spiegelman (Pure genius)
What do you read for pleasure?
Erotica, science fiction, fantasy, literary fiction, genre-lit hybrids, anything that interests me, really.
Describe your desk
My lap.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
Toledo, Ohio... It looks like a cultural wasteland, but there are hidden gems here. The art community is brimming with life. Many people don't even know how big our ballroom and salsa-dancing communities are. And the Old West End area, where I grew up, is simply beautiful. I put bits and pieces of my hometown in nearly every story I write.
When did you first start writing?
I've been writing since I can remember. Literally. I probably wrote more than I played with toys.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Sometimes it's the writing process itself.
Sometimes it's showing off my work and watching people enjoy it.
Whatever it is - it is *not* the editing process.
What do your fans mean to you?
Everything! You are all beautiful ponies!
