Interview with Brenda Thornlow

Where did you grow up?
I grew up in Brooklyn, New York, in a neighborhood called Bay Ridge. When I was 16 my parents and I moved to Orange County, California. I lived all over Orange County, starting in San Juan Capistrano then moving to Mission Viejo, Huntington Beach, Fullerton and Anaheim. In November of 2003 I decided to move back to my hometown of Bay Ridge and have been here ever since.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
I don't know how old I was, but I know I was in grade school. I used to love Beverly Cleary's Ramona Quimby series so I decided to create my own fan-fiction novel featuring a Ramona-type character. I was on a road trip to Pennsylvania with my family to visit my great-grandmother when I wrote it. Since it was so many years ago I don't remember the premise of the story. I wish I had saved it!
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I work full-time as an administrative assistant. My free time is spent with my husband of 4 years and our 3 fur babies; 2 cats and a Maltese named Norman. My husband and I love to travel. My favorite trip of all time was to Paris. Some day I would love to live there. Our last vacation was to Playa del Carmen, Mexico.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
I've always loved reading ever since I learned how so I don't remember the very first book I ever read. However, the first book I read that made a big impact on me and my life would probably be Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë. Powerful story, engaging characters, the first book that made me feel as if I was entering another world. Also the first book which made me experience a "book hangover." It was several days before I wanted to pick up another book.
What do you read for pleasure?
When comes to fiction I enjoy authors like Wally Lamb, Paul Auster and Patricia Cornwell. With non-fiction, I enjoy true crime. My two favorite crime writers are Ann Rule and Kathryn Casey.
What do your fans mean to you?
Two words: the world!!!
What are you working on next?
The follow-up to My Life as I Knew It and a memoir about my life growing up in a religious cult.
Where else can we find your writing?
