Interview with Barbara McDonell

What's the first story you ever read?
The Pooh books by A. A. Milne were my first reads – gifts from my wonderful Grandpa. My fave character was bouncy Tigger and I loved the rhymes. When I was six, the first book I read without pictures was “The Secret Garden” by Frances Hodgson Burnett. The story transported me to the moors of Scotland where quirky characters included a curmudgeonly girl and a disabled boy, living in a dark and dreary house with 100 mystery rooms that were declared out of bounds. I was riveted.
When did you start writing?
As soon as I could read and write, I got pen pals. Then, in Grade 6, I wrote an essay and my English teacher said, “If you wrote this yourself, you have talent and should write some more.” His rather negative compliment somehow inspired me to write some short stories in high school - one was published in the school annual, another in the community paper. At 16, I penned a (dreadful) novel. For several decades I published newspaper and magazine articles, before trying my hand at five full-length novels.
What inspires you to get out of bed each morning?
It’s impossible to stay in bed when a hungry cat is jumping on your chest demanding breakfast!
Do you find writing is a lonely occupation?
How could I be lonely when my two furry four-footed girls, Daisy-Mae and Dandelion, share my desk? They are sisters, born on Valentine’s Day. At the moment, Daisy-Mae is on my lap with one paw leaning on my keyboard, tapping out “XXX” and “000” into my manuscript. Dande is standing on the desk so I can’t see the screen at all - she has a paw dipped into my glass of water and will soon spill its contents all over everything, including me.
What do you do when you aren't writing?
I read everything I can get my hands on. I read fast and can easily get through two or three books in a week. I like walking and cannot resist introducing myself to every cat and dog along the route. I enjoy visiting friends, sharing laughter and stories. Because I love adventure, I’m usually first in line to try something new and zany.
What is your writing process?
Sit on chair. Type. Fall off chair from hunger, thirst or exhaustion. Deal with those issues. Return to desk. Sit on chair. Type. Fall off chair. Repeat.
