Interview with Byron Gordon

What do you read for pleasure?
I read a little of everything. I try to focus on books within the genre's I write, just to see what everyone else is doing and broaden my exposure to the tropes and pitfalls and all that jazz. But mostly because I love the escapism of fantasy, the action of thrillers, and the language of hardboiled fiction.

Right now, on my to-be-read list, I have The Nautical Chart, The Phillip K Dick Reader, and a half dozen or so assorted fantasy titles on my Kindle. The last two books I read were Character and Plot by Jeff Gerke, and Little Brother by Corey Doctorow. The first was good (if you're interested in writing) and the second was excellent, especially if you like sci-fi thrillers.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
My wife gave me an Amazon Kindle as a present several years ago. You know, one of the old ones with the black and white background and the clunky keyboard at the bottom. I honestly prefer actual books. You know, smell of the pages, feel of the paper, the gloss of the cover... who am I kidding, I like to be able to hold something when I spend money on it. I'm hopelessly out of date though, so there you have it...
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Keeping my pie-hole shut.

No seriously, I've tried some minor promotion on Facebook and my blog and participating in Smashword's Annual sale and it hasn't done much. I do have a newsletter set up but I haven't had time to do much with it yet. I will participate in Smashword's July Sale again this year and with more series out it might be better. So stay tuned for deals and sign up for my newsletter!
Describe your desk
It is a simple rectangle set on four legs. The top is four oak boards, framed in a two and a half inch oak frame. There is a deep red spot in the third board back that I like to imagine has a sketchy history. The legs are cut from poplar, with a nice greenish grain that runs through it. The oak was sourced from pallets, the poplar from Lowes, and the entire desk is finished with beeswax. It took me a year to finish it and its worth every second I spent on it.

I have a monitor, mouse, and keyboard on top of the desk. Next to the mouse pad is a clipboard (that I set my water mug on), a notepad, and a pen. Less clutter on the desk makes it easier for me to focus.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
On the Eastern Shore of Maryland. It is very flat and swampy. Sleepy towns and a relaxed approach to time and life. A little redneck, but there is also a lot of more hoity-toity people who move there for the sleepy atmosphere and charm.

Influence on my writing, well. If my story has any type of class struggle it tends to feature rich people trying to obtain a more relaxed lifestyle and in doing so drive poorer families away from their ancestral homes. Poor people tend to be good guys and my bad guys tend to be rich.

Oh, and I like mountains. I never had them growing up and I love mountains. So I like to throw in mountains whenever I can.
When did you first start writing?
I don't remember.

Sorry, I really don't. I doubt it was as young as six or even eight when I started scribbling random stories on scrap paper but... I started working on my first novel when I was thirteen.
What's the story behind your latest book?
I don't quite understand this question but here goes... :)

The last book I finished was Cards and Corpses. It's a short thriller set in the future, part of the Gunner Long series. I love Raymond Chandler's books and wanted to try to do something similar to Marlowe. Chandler is an absolute master, so I stole the beginning of the plot out of one of his shorts, added a few things (like my own characters) and took out some things, and wound up with Cards and Corpses.

It was fun. I learned a lot about writing mysteries and writing hardboiled fiction. And wrote an action packed thriller while I was at it. I mean, how cool is that?
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I went indie because I don't like jumping through hoops. I'm very independent and I don't work easily as part of a team. I like getting feedback directly from readers. In other words, if I don't tell a good story and my cover art sucks, and the blurb is no good, then the story doesn't sell. For me, it is easier to stay motivated and keep writing with that feedback than with editors and agents telling me how I'm doing everything wrong.

The other reason is because the more people you involve in the process, the more agenda's you bring in. I just want to tell stories and entertain people. I'm not trying to be the next breakout, or write the book that changes the world, or anything fancy like that. If I was an editor or agent, I would be looking for a writer who is trying to do that. So I leave the whole thing to other people and just tell my stories and get them out there. That's the fun part. Why do the rest if you don't have too?
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords is a super cool distributor and they makes things a lot easier for me. Selling in Apple, Kobo, Barnes and Noble, and a bunch of others would be a lot more work for me without Smashwords. So cheers for Smashwords!
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Figuring out what the story is about. Sitting in a chair and developing carpal tunnel on a keyboard kind of sucks. But its the price I pay to learn how the characters are going to solve their problems and keep on going. When I start a story, I never really know how it is going to end. I usually know the general direction its going, but the characters really determine what's going to happen.

For example, I just finished "The Vignar Cycle". When I started the series in January of 2014, I wanted to write ten action/adventure short stories a la Conan the Barbarian. I've always been interested in Norse mythology and Vikings (13th Warrior anyone?) and so I figured that could be fun to throw in too. I got the rough concept of this warrior who lost his family in a previous conflict and now that the war is over, he's homeless and wandering around. Initially I figured he'd put together a band of adventurers and go treasure hunting and righting rural wrongs. That was my plan. Vignar however, had different ideas. He did not want to solve murders (his style of investigation is to keep chopping things up. Eventually you kill the guilty party). He did not want to go treasure-hunting (it got too boring.) He resisted putting together a band of adventurers by picking fights with most of the likely individuals I brought in. Finally, I realized that this guy just wanted to avenge his family and I had to write a novel about him, just to give both of us some closure. That kept me busy through October. My ten short stories wound up being something more like five short stories, two novella's, and a novel.

Completely different than what I planned, but that's the fun of it all. The journey is what it is all about.
How do you approach cover design?
Lately I've tried hiring out. Sometimes I can con my wife into doing some magic with photoshop. Sometimes I do it myself. Cover art is one of those things, I either have a great idea right off the bat, or I struggle for hours trying to translate the story into a graphical depiction.

I have very little graphical talent, drawing and painting are beyond me, so original artwork is not something I can do on my own. But I've learned a lot about graphical design and there is a lot you can do with just one or two simple images and the right design. Usually it just takes a lot of digging on Shutterstock...
