Interview with C.M. Fick

When did you first start writing?
I first started writing novels in 2007, after I showed my mother an outline of a short story I'd written with intentions of turning it into a graphic novel. She prodded me into writing it as a novel, instead of continuing with it as I'd originally intended, and soon I had a full-length manuscript with ideas for the second and third books. After writing the Fate Trilogy, I began researching and developing an epic fantasy series, which has yet to be completed. In between writing the fantasy series, I started working on the When the Dead Rise short stories to give myself a break when needed (I LOVE zombies) - always have and always will.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Sharing my stories with readers from around the world. Besides that, I love delving into a world, learning about my characters and discovering what motivates them. How the world has made them evolve into who I envision them to be and how that drives them through a narrative.
Describe your desk
My desk (it's really a drafting table) sits against a large window, where I can look out at the mountains. On the window ledge sits a cactus, my Web Design diploma and a really cool rock with crystals inside. On my desk, I have a shelf where I keep my miscellaneous writing supplies: note pads, post-its, pens, pencils, hole punch, tape etc. There is a writers companion book, a book of herbs and their medicinal uses (both used for quick reference) and a binder with my fantasy novel edits and notes. Beside my computer, I have a set of crystals I use to keep my hands moving while deep in thought. As an ex-smoker, this has been the biggest challenge to overcome. There is also always a big cup of coffee sitting beside me.
What is your writing process?
After getting an idea, I typically outline the story in a quick draft. I then leave it for a day or two, letting the idea develop further in the back of my mind. When I go back to the outline, I add all the ideas that I've thought about and work it into a basic timeline. From there, I begin my research, fleshing out the story as it develops in my head. With my rough timeline done, I then start writing. After completing a chapter, I'll either move on to the next or finish for the day - depending on what time it is at night - and return to it the following day, rereading it to check for flow and content.
What do you read for pleasure?
I enjoy reading dystopians, apocalyptic/ post-apocalyptic (especially anything with zombies), fantasy and sci-fi. I also enjoy mysteries when my brain needs something lighter. I do not like reading romance novels.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
When I'm not writing, I'm taking care of my baby girl. In any other spare time I may have, I enjoy painting/ drawing and spending time with my family.
