Interview with Charles Smith

Describe your desk
My desk is basic. I have pictures of my family, including my 4yr old son, and his sister who are my inspirations in life. A spot for my coffee cup of course, and a radio.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in various places of the U.S.A. Born in Worcester Mass, lived on the Mexican Boarder in Texas, a small town called Van Horn, and I lived on a Navajo Reservation in Arizona. My life as a whole, including where and how I grew up was a huge influence on my writing.
When did you first start writing?
I first started writing poetry when I was about 16-17.
What's the story behind your latest book?
The books I'm submitting to be published are informational to start off with. I'll have 3 in total to begin with. First will be a kind of martial arts I created, using knowledge over your fists for self protection. The second will be Information on various trauma and ways to cope with trauma including PTSD. The third will be a ton of information on positive thinking that I call Operation: Happy Mind.
What do your fans mean to you?
My fans mean the world to me, without their love and support my life wouldn't be the same.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
The work I do being a Peer Specialist supporting others to better their lives.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
I wrote a poem about my parents entitled You're In Heaven. It was the first of many poems.
How do you approach cover design?
I go with how the feeling I get from the book. Like with Operation: Enlighten I chose a crossed out fist, some people think of self defense and self protection as using your fists. The objective of this workbook is to show people how to use your mind in defense, not your fists. Unless as a last resort.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Getting my ideas out there, I know what works for me, may not work for everyone but all types of knowledge helps you become a better person.
What are you working on next?
I'm considering writing my biography.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I spend as much time with my 4yr old son as I can. I also go hiking, train in martial arts, and spend time with my family.
