Interview with Calvin Travostin

What is your writing process?
I like to start off with a somewhat loose plot structure. My stories take on an episodic style of writing naturally. I guess my brain is just weird that way!
I find that coming up with the characters, setting, and overall theme of the story beforehand really helps a lot once I start writing. It may sound weird, but it almost feels as if the characters do most of the work, and I simply write down what they do.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
To me, the greatest joy of writing is seeing the world and characters you have created come to life on the page. There is something simply amazing about seeing your own thoughts and imagination take form in front of your eyes. The feeling is indescribable.
What are you working on next?
I'm actually writing another series in order to fill in the gaps between episodes of House of Khepru. This series takes on a more paranormal/ science fiction style, and I hope I can appeal to more readers with it.
When did you first start writing?
I've been writing ever since I was a kid, starting at about 10 years old. Over time, I started writing on and off, sometimes going several months without typing a single word.
Now, I'm working on a serialized story, House of Khepru, that I've been developing for about two years now. I hope readers appreciate my style, and I hope I can inspire others to not only write themselves, but to achieve anything they want to.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
I've found that asking friends and family to spread the word of my work to be very effective. While Facebook and Twitter have also worked, word-of-mouth is still a very effective marketing tool.
Who are your favorite authors?
Rick Riordan and James Dashner are my two personal favorite authors. I very much admire their style of writing and the characters they have created.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I've always loved telling stories since I was a kid. When I started writing in middle school, I didn't think about putting my work out there for everyone to see.
I didn't want to go through all of the hassle involving traditional publishers, and I figured that I'm the only one who can tell my story the way it's meant to be told, I decided to try my hand at indie publishing. I put House of Khepru: Volume One up on Smashwords, and the rest is history.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords has made it easy to publish my work to multiple online retailers, and has saved me a lot of time when it comes to publishing and distributing. Thanks to that, I have more time to write, edit, promote, and even help my fellow indie authors.
What do your fans mean to you?
My fans and readers are the backbone of what I do and stand for as an author. My readers are the reason I write, and the reason I keep writing. I write because I want to help my readers, and give them hope and inspiration through my words. Through my writing, I hope I can inspire people to go for their dreams, because that is exactly what I've done, and what I stand for.
