Interview with Cali Gilbert

Published 2014-02-27.
What is your writing process?
I don't really have a set schedule when it comes to writing. I write whenever inspired, and that can come at any moment's notice. I have realized that my inspiration grows whenever I'm around water, so I usually go to the beach whenever I want to connect with my Muse.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
I can't say I remember the FIRST story I ever read, but I do remember which story had the greatest impact. It was the book, The Celestine Prophecy by James Redfield. A friend recommended the book back in the early 1990s and I feel that book set the stage for my transformational journey.
How do you approach cover design?
I'm a photographer and artist along with being a writer, so I have created all of my cover designs for each of my books. A good photograph goes a long way with delivering a message. As far of title and subtitle, you want something that will grab the reader's attention....short for title (3 words) and subtitle should be what the reader can take away from the book.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
1. The Celestine Prophecy by James Redfield - Led me on the path to finding my true purpose.
2. The Success Principles by Jack Canfield - Gave me that extra push to TAKE ACTION.
3. Count Your Blessings by Dr. John DeMartini - Taught me about deep appreciation
4. Everyday Abundance by Karen Hood-Caddy - Just a great little book you can always return to.
5. It's Simply Sausalito: An Inspirational Journey by ME - This book was my creative outlet for the worst year of my life, and means so much to me. It also fulfilled my dream of becoming a published author.
What do you read for pleasure?
I like detective novels. One of my favourites was The Archy McNally Series by Lawrence Sanders.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
My Android
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
I feel the key is to market your book MONTHS before its release. For It's Simply Serendipity, I marketed and promoted the book for seven months prior to its release. I used my website, social media and created a 12-week blog leading up to the release where I shared small bits of chapters as a teaser. By the time the book came out, my readers were anticipating it.
Describe your desk
My desk is situated between two windows facing the ocean which gives me TONS of light, which I love. I have some flowers and a photo of my Love on the right side and some stacked files and a small lamp on the left side. My laptop sits in the middle and I gaze at a drawing on the wall of the Eiffel Tower I purchased during my first trip to Paris MANY years ago.
When did you first start writing?
I began writing in high school. I wrote for the school newspaper and began to keep a journal after I graduated. I still keep a journal, now some 25 years later.
What's the story behind your latest book?
It's Simply Serendipity: Four Steps to Manifesting a Life of Bliss is MY story of transformation. It covers an 18-month period in my life where I literally lost everything (child, car, money, relationship, home) and was faced with the decision to either GIVE UP or START OVER. In choosing the latter, I ended up implementing a 4-step formula to create the life of my dreams in under three months. I share the formula and teach others how to implement it into their own lives.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I wanted to retain the rights to my work and I didn't want to wait two years for my first book to be released. I published two of my five books while I was 'homeless' and published four of the five books in ONE year. There was no way I would be able to do that had I sought out a traditional publisher.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
My greatest joy of writing is having a creative outlet in which to share my thoughts and know that my work truly helps others.
What do your fans mean to you?
My fans mean everything to me. Their support and guidance throughout this journey has been incredible and continues to amaze me. I've learned so much about the publishing industry over the last three years that now I LOVE helping others reach their own publishing dreams. I truly believe in Paying it Forward.
What are you working on next?
I am currently working on my first novel, It's Simply Tuesday in Paris which is due out in July. I'm really excited about this book as I've never written fiction, but I'm one who wants to grow as a writer. Now living in LA, I'm sure I'll eventually take up screenwriting as well.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Knowing that I get to do what I truly LOVE, write and take photographs. There's nothing better than heading down to the beach, listening to the sound of the ocean waves crashing, writing what comes to me, and then capturing a photograph of the sun setting. Bliss!
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Creating something! I'm always creating, whether it's a cover design, a website, a photograph, etc. I'm an ARTIST and I was born to create and I'm so grateful for the opportunity to do so. I love spending time outdoors surrounded by nature. This fuels my creativity.
