Interview with Sabrina E L B Scales

Published 2016-02-01.
What is your writing process?
My process is pretty informal since my stories come to me in pieces. I have never started writing a story knowing how it was going to turn out and that's what I enjoy most about my writing style. It's like I'm the reader as well as the writer.

My first draft is usually the bare minimum as far as content goes, but I always go back and build upon that during the proofreading process.

If I could describe my writing process I guess I'd call it polished improv!
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in what most would call the hood. It wasn't the worst neighborhood to be raised in but it also wasn't the worst.

Growing up underprivileged was the primary spark in my imagination. There was something so magical about being able to read or write a story or poem and instantly transport myself into any place I wanted to be. I still do it to this day!
When did you first start writing?
I can't even remember not writing! I had to be at least 6yrs old when I wrote my first poem for a drug free contest poster. I won 1st place and it was my thing from then on!
What's the story behind your latest book?
My latest and first published book, Lena, starts out as a typical love story but takes a turn in another direction. It's a product of my imagination, as all of my stories are, and it provides an even combination of humor, pain, and of course romance.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The most fullfilling thing about any piece that I've ever written, be it published or not, is the reader's reaction. I love to evoke emotion because emotions are what connect us all.
