Interview with Cameron J Quinn

Describe your desk
At the moment my desk is more of a table. Working from the kitchen with two kids, two dogs, and four cats can get a bit distracting so I occasionally escape to my bedroom and write in bed. It's comfy and I get a surprising amount of work done there.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up on a small farm in central New England. It influenced my writing quiet a bit, the scenery I like is usually lush and green, similar to my home. I like to involve all the senses in my writing and all I have to do to remember the way the leaves smell in spring or how the sun felt on a hot summer afternoon, is to close my eyes.
Growing up on a farm, you learn about life and death very early. My childhood was tough in the lessons learned but they definitely shaped me and my writing.
When did you first start writing?
In first grade, we were encouraged to write fictional stories. I wrote about a baby who was abused and neglected by her mother then rescued by a slew of animals. No, my mother was not neglectful or abusive. I just wanted the baby to live with the animals and in my six year old mind, this was the most logical way to accomplish it. I mean if she had an amazing mother like mine, she wouldn't want to live with Kangaroo and Tiger in a cave in the middle of the woods.
What's the story behind your latest book?
I have a series going right now, The Starsboro Chronicles. When I was ten I sat down at my father's new computer and started writing a story. I continued to write about a human girl and her elf prince for years. In 2011, I realized they had three children. Two of which stood out to me. Zurik was the oldest and Trent the youngest. While my two main characters lived in another dimension, I knew these two children were on earth. They were in North Carolina and they had grown up away from their parents. With that small amount of information I wrote what would eventually be molded into the first scene of the first chronicle, How to Get Arrested. There were inconsistencies with Zurik and Trent's stories that I just couldn't figure out. Finally last year, I realized they were shorter than novels and there would be many of them. I decided to write them like a TV show, in episodes. They would be released, starting in January, once a month every month with seasonal specials. This break through was huge for me. I had stories for these two floating around my head for years with no way to get them out, until now.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
As I wrote my stories, a friend of mine had finished her first novel and was looking for an agent. I helped her along the way and knew her book was something special. I helped her find agents to submit too. No matter how well her book fit what they were looking for, no one seemed to want it. The timing was wrong as far as they were concerned. I started looking into indie publishing and soon pointed her in that direction. I decided it was the right choice for me and she eventually came around as well.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords is making it easier for me to manage the channels through which I can get my books to readers. I am still pretty new here but I suspect Smashwords will prove itself within the first couple of months.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I love hearing from readers. The point of writing for me, is to tell a story. I have these stories rolling around inside my head and to hear from readers who have enjoyed them is definitely the best part of being an author.
What do your fans mean to you?
Fans are the point. The story teller I look up to most is Joss Whedon. If I can create characters that fans love half as much as they love Buffy, Mal, Angel, or Echo, I have done my job. I want my fans to love my characters. To feel what they are feeling and to always want more.
What are you working on next?
I am currently working on finishing up Season 1 of The Starsboro Chronicles as well as a zombie apocalypse story. I'm hoping git will be novel length and ready by October but that's my "Stretch" goal for this year. If it isn't ready you can bet it will be for Oct. 2017.
Who are your favorite authors?
I am a huge Sherrilyn Kenyon and Stephen King fan. I'm really into the White Trash Zombie series at the moment by Diana Rowland, and of course V.S.Holmes' Reforged series is high on my list. I have a hard time picking. If I have read more than one of their books I consider them a favorite, so Jane Austen and Rachel Vincent should also make this list.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
My kids. I know everyone with kids probably says that but showing them that they can make a living doing what they love is so important to me. Also, anyone who has kids knows it is impossible to sleep past 7 AM without the little buggers jumping on you, asking for food and attention.
I'm also working on children's book series my royalties of which will go to my children's college funds.
My parents are another driving force in my life. I want to be successful for them. I want to show them that I listened when they spoke and I learned. My success is a direct result of them.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I like to read, draw, play with my kids and watch TV. I know TV is a bit taboo but I love stories in all their forms. TV, video games, books and even apps can tell a story.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I know this is Smashwords and I should say I find books on here but Amazon has this nifty little Indie Authors button. I'm currently working on helping Indies get noticed by blogging about books and I usually find them using that feature on Amazon or on Facebook. Unfortunately, a lot of Indies books are in Kindle Unlimited which means Amazon is the only place I can find them. Maybe I should start checking here if they aren't Unlimited. There's an idea, haha.
