Interview with David Russell

What do you read for pleasure?
For pleasure I like to read a variety of things. These can range from a general fiction novel at bedtime, or on a lengthy road trip with my wife in the car. It may be a fiction article from Buzzfeed or the CS Monitor or some other publication about learning or Artificial Intelligence. Occasionally, I like to read a biography. I have an interest in Jewish writing on Torah portions and the meaning of specific Hebrew words. To me, reading is life long learning in an informal setting. No finals, no exams, no term papers but a lot of practical application over time! Oh, and something to blog about too.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
My E-reading device of preference is either my desktop computer or iPhone.
- The desktop computer, because I can view a PDF doc as HTML.
- The iPhone because I almost have figured out how to find the book and page in the book that I may be reading. Basic and simple have always worked well for me! I'm too stubborn to change now.
Describe your desk
This could be fascinating to describe my desk. It has three sections. My chair is in the middle, facing the mid-section. On either side of me, about stomach level, are two other desk sections. On the right, I have my coffee mug, card file and a shelving unit. That shelving unit winds around to the middle, and on the leftside, is a stand-alone four-tiered shelving unit full of notebook binders. On the leftside of my desk is a 60-year-old Perkins Braille writer, which my parents gave me in high-school as a Holiday gift. It needs repair! I have been a blind person from infancy but still enjoy life, living, Uno, Scrabble, a good drama, baseball game or other sport game on TV or radio. Oops, I digress but who doesn't.
When did you first start writing?
I first started writing in middle school. My first two term papers were about the history of the automobile and I learned from my parents that one doesn't take the easy way out by turning in the same assignment twice in two consecutive grades.
I started writing fiction in 2009 when feelings about a held position on a matter of faith, caused me to write a novella which is now out of print.
What's the story behind your latest book?
My latest book is an anthology. It was produced by me and five other authors for two reasons:
- As faith-based fiction, express thanks to the Jewish faith for our heritage as Christians!
- To remind all of us that Jesus' name was Yeshua, and the Bible characters had Hebrew names too. Each of the stories imagine what it may have been like for a Bible character (or neo-Bible character) to meet Yeshua. The stories are warm and personable in tone, convenient to read in one sitting. Personally, I like this collection! My hope is you will too.
