Interview with Carolyn Smith

Published 2014-10-13.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in rural Mississippi. I was and still is influenced by Mississippians attitude toward mental health and God. I decided to write this book because I realized just how much the views and opinions regarding any form of mental illnesses was deeply rooted. But if wanted to live what I believe to be a functional life, I had to confront these views for what they were.
When did you first start writing?
I started writing in my late 40's. One month after graduating with my doctoral degree in 2013 God told me it was time to write my first book. I was 62 years old.
What's the story behind your latest book?
The story behind my book is Jesus Christ and the Supernatural Power of God to help and assist individuals such as myself living with mental disorders or anyone who has lose hope in life. I told individuals at my first signing if you have a problem with mental disorders written on the front of my book, then replace it with whatever you are dealing with. We hear a lots about about mental illnesses after a tragic event, but I wanted to offered to readers and the world someone who live daily with this illness. So I 'm putting myself out there for the world to see what can happen to anyone who put their trust and life in the hand of God. I want to show something positive that I believe can only be found in the middle of our suffering world- through Jesus Christ. The story is not get people to feel sorry for me, but to be happy that I found Christ in the mist of all of my suffering.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I did not want to be an author and if you read the book you might understand why. But every person created by God has a purpose and if you are a student of the Bible then you know that like many before me God's plan for me was not the ones I would have picked. Still, He told me my story had to told and it had to be told by me. I could not look at the fallout of the negative feedback that He told me would come. He told me as He did Abraham He would blessed them that blessed and me and curse them who did not. Also, as I speak about in the front of my book, I now belong to God and if I lived to be 150 years I could never pay back the debt. Finally, I believe to be the most important, I love God and I know that because of Jesus Christ I am here today writing these answers. So I write when and what He tells me too.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
I learned about Smashwords through my editor, so I do not know a lot about this company. But I do believe that through them I will be successful, so I have great expectations for this company and myself.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Because of my mental illnesses and my lived experiences writing was somewhat like therapy. Now for those of you who have been in therapy; I would say it was soul searching. I found joy in just able to just put it out there and actually see it in writing. Joy in known that I obeyed God despite any outcomes. I have been obedience to my Lord and Savior. I can smile because of the peace that is in my heart which comes from my relationship with God.
What do your fans mean to you?
Fans are people and because of God I now can truly say that I love anyone and I hope my fans can feel that love as they read my book.
What are you working on next?
God has moved me on to another book. In fact, before this book was in print He had given me my next title and told me to start writing and I did.
