Interview with Casey Harvell

When did you first start writing?
Back in 2006. I've always loved to read. I always wrote growing up, but 2006 was the year I decided to make a real go of it.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I decided not to give up or get discouraged when I couldn't find an agent or publisher. It's such a hard industry to break into. When I found out I could do it myself, I was ecstatic. Plus, now I do everything my way, I don't have to compromise.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in New England, my first novel was set in New England, but I challenged myself to push the limits and set my second novel on Florida.
What's the story behind your latest book?
Righteous Decisions

When Lettie, a misfit photographer, learns that her nightmares have become reality, she is more than a little freaked out. But as her world gets turned upside down, and at the top of a paranormal hit list, she discovers more about herself then she ever thought possible.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Getting those gosh darn voices out of my head! J/K (kind of). My day dreams are no longer only entertaining me ;)
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords rocks. With all the channels it distributes to automatically, its hard to top.
What do your fans mean to you?
Everything! Really, an author without fans basically writes a diary.
What are you working on next?
Charged- (I'm excited about this one! )

High school girl gets charged with electricity in an accident, ironically just in time to save the world from a freak nanobot apocalypse.
Who are your favorite authors?
Amanda Hocking, Charlaine Harris, Lizzy Ford, Nicky Charles, Janet Evanovich, Nora Roberts, Margaret Ann Mitchell, Madelyn Alt, HP Mallory, Jane Austen & Max Brooks, to name a few.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
With my kids, reading excessively, scaring myself watching zombie flicks, playing COD- my stress relief.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
If it looks good, I'll read it. And as an indie author, I try to support my peers as much as possible. I think that it is important for us to stick together!
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Hmmm...the first I remember s trying to write the sequel to the sequel of Gone With the Wind. I was maybe 11, and so upset that the story ended at the end of Scarlett, that I'd decided to continue it. Somewhere I still have it, on a 3 1/2 inch floppy disk that I have no drive for.
What is your writing process?
I write. Pretty much anywhere, at anytime. I have kids. I take what I can get.
How do you approach cover design?
That was definitely a learning process! But I'm good now, and I can feel confident to take what I'm picturing and bring it to life.
