Interview with John Catapano

What are you working on next?
I am in the process of editing a sequel to my Dr Sarcophagus story "Clarence." "The Unusual Suspects" finds the Doctor and Gerrard trying to figure out which of their new acts might be a shapeshifter.
Who are your favorite authors?
Some of my favorites are Ray Bradbury, H.P. Lovecraft, R.E. Howard.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
The possibilities to create. I'm an engineer and an artist so I am always involved in a couple of projects. I see writing in the same vein; its a way to create and solve problems all at the same time.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I'm a Master model builder so I am usually building and painting a model for a client. I especially enjoy adding Lighting and effects into models that are not designed for it.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I go by descriptions, if it sounds like an interesting premise I'll take a shot.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes I do, it was for a comic book and I plan on expanding it into a novel at some point in the near future.
What is your writing process?
Everything comes from an idea, an irony, an event. I'll consider the idea for a few days and if I think it would be interesting to write and read; I'll start laying out the plot and characters. That process can take a week, a month, or more. When I have a solid outline I start to write. I write everything down. If the story starts to go off plot I write it down. When I finally have what I consider complete I go back and edit. I'll go through any number of edits; for grammar, punctuation, letter and word spacing, timelines, names, etc. When the editing is done, I consult with an artist about the cover. I design my covers and work closely with a friend who's a great artist. When the covers done its off to printing and publishing, both physical and digital.
