Interview with Pringle McCloy

When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I am a freelance technical writer. I also have published humorous articles in Toronto and Vancouver newspapers. I like to read and garden.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
My family. They usually need me for something. Coffee and writing follow before my day job begins. In the evening I may or may not get the chance to write. All of the above inspire me to get out of bed each day.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
Sometimes through my sisters who are avid readers and sometimes through Kindle search. I love to re-read old mysteries as well, my favorite author is Raymond Chandler.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes. It was a short story about my family. My sister had been curling with my dad and they came home fighting. It was a funny story as those who read my work would know.
What is your writing process?
I won't say that I've never written an outline because I have. I just haven't followed one. In THE JACK series, my detective, Charlie Hampton, usually tells me where he wants to go and what he'll do when he gets there. The chick lit novels have been inspired by real life situations, however have a life of their own.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
It was a Mickey Spillane paperback novel although I don't remember which one. Spillane was my dad's favorite author so there was plenty for me to read. I remember thinking about Mike Hammer and wondering if I could invent a similar tough-guy detective one day down the road. Although it took a while I eventually did.
How do you approach cover design?
I have an amazing cover designer who has designed all my novels. She is Tatiana Vila from Vila Designs. Tatiana works with me to get the crux of the story so the covers will depict what is to come. I highly recommend Tatiana.
What do you read for pleasure?
Mainly mysteries. Mainstream suspense as well written by lawyers like John Grisham and Scott Turow.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
Kindle
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
With seven novels now posted I'm just starting the marketing process. I have readers willing to give testimonials so I'll start with that.
Describe your desk
Neat and tidy. I can't write in a mess. I'm confused enough as it is.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up on a farm which gave me great opportunity to explore. As a child I rode stick horses through woodland trails with my imaginary friends. I guess it started then.
When did you first start writing?
I wrote a poem in grade three. I was not my grandmother's favorite so I wrote an unkind poem about her. I read it at the dinner table to an audience of twelve and it got a lot of laughs. I guess that's why I'm a humorous writer.
