Interview with Cecily Wolfe

Who are your favorite authors?
Cassandra Clare, Amy Clipston, Elise Kova, Alys Arden, Kathleen Fuller
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
hungry cats
What do your fans mean to you?
Knowing that a character I've written has meant something to a reader - it's everything.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
recommendations from friends, browsing
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes, I was in the third grade and wrote a very short story about Helen Keller, who I was obsessed with at the time. I have no memory of what happened in the story, just that it was a way for me to connect with a real person I admired so much.
What is your writing process?
A lot of handwritten notes, drawings, charts, timelines - then Scrivener for a first draft, Word for revisions.
How do you approach cover design?
Free stock photos that have something to do with the story, something unique. For A Harvest of Stars, I wanted a blue dress similar to Lucy's, and the shape of a star.
What do you read for pleasure?
Everything that looks good - no apologies.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
Nook Tablet - it's great for the treadmill.
Describe your desk
A mess. I clean it all the time, but it is still a mess.
When did you first start writing?
When I was eight, with my Helen Keller story.
What's the story behind your latest book?
Lucy, Locklyn's mother, has been with me for a long, long time. I didn't plan for her to be Lock's mother, but there she was, and she took over. Isaiah came to me before Lock, and told me the story of his best friend, the girl trapped with a dying mother and abusive stepfather, and it took off from there and became A Harvest of Stars.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
Lots of submission to agents and editors with 'thanks but no thanks' and 'the writing is great, story is great, just not what we're looking for right now' and the worst - 'not a good fit for us, but do you have anything like it?'

What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
My characters. Telling their stories, hearing from readers who can identify with them.
