Interview with Celia Conrad

Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes, it was a short story I wrote for my friends about a Teddy bear and his adventures.
What is your writing process?
If I have an idea for something I will write it down. I like to jot ideas down on paper. I sketch out a general outline and the plot development starts from there. With the crime novels I am always working backwards and thinking about red-herrings and where certain events are going to happen in the book. All the books I have written to date have required a good deal of research. They are legal crime novels and so it helps to have come from a legal background but that makes it even more important that anything about legal matters is accurate in the books so the research can be extensive.
How do you approach cover design?
For the crime trilogy I knew that it was important to carry the same theme for all three books so that they could be instantly recognizable as part of the same series. So the covers were all designed with that in mind. The first book, A Model Murder, as the title suggest is about the murder of a model. The cover has the lipstick forming one of the letters of the title. The second book Wilful Murder is about an Australian heiress so Wills and money. Part of the book is also set in Australia so the cover has an Australian theme with a boomerang forming the letter L and there is a scroll representing a Will over the letter I. Murder in Hand is the most Italian of the books which is clearly shown by the colours of the Italian flag and also the flag itself incorporated into the text. A Beretta forms the R of murder.
What do you read for pleasure?
I really enjoy a good murder mystery (naturally) and I have quite a few books of that genre I read. I am an Italophile and enjoy books set in Italy or with an Italian theme. I do enjoy reading a good biography. I am also very interested in film and theatre.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I currently use Kindle for Mac as it is convenient for me.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
It offers another forum for my books and helps increase their visibility to potential readers.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The creativity. It is very therapeutic for me.
What do your fans mean to you?
So much. Authors need readers and reviewers and a sound following.
What are you working on next?
I have in mind working on another crime series but I am currently working on a satirical novel.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Reading, researching, designing, studying.
When did you first start writing?
I have always written but only started writing in earnest about ten years ago when I stopped working in the legal profession and became a full-time writer,
