Interview with Carolyn Kay

Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
I still remember reading A Wrinkle In Time. I think I read it twice back to back I enjoyed it so much. Though it's not the first book I remember reading, it is the one that had a huge impact on me. I think I became a scientist because of the influence of that book. I can't wait to see the movie adaptation!
What do you read for pleasure?
I read mostly urban fantasy and epic fantasy. I'm a huge fan of Jim Butcher and Kevin Hearne.
Describe your desk
Right now my desk is pretty clean, thanks to my husband, who took all the clutter and hid it away in a box. I feel less cramped and more creative now that there's only my Hela, Maleficent dragon, and Enchantress Funko Pops, my laptop and a few notebooks on my desk. And a bottle of hard cider. :)
When did you first start writing?
I started writing seriously in 2012 during NaNoWriMo (National novel writing month). I wrote the first 50,000 words of what became a 90k word Avengers/Star Wars crossover fanfiction novel. You can find it on It's titled A Jedi Lost.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I wanted control over my cover art and my interior art. The world of Ashelon is a vision I share with my husband, and it wouldn't be the same without his art on and in the books.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
As sappy as it may sound, my husband inspires me to get out of bed each day. He's always working on his art--either doing projects for other authors, or working on his own designs. His creativity inspires my own, and I'm always excited to start the day with him.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I don't get a lot of free time, but when I do, I like to knit--mostly fingerless gloves, and when it's nice, I garden. I'm also trying to brew kombucha for the first time.
How do you approach cover design?
I'm lucky enough to be married to a fabulous illustrator and graphic artist. I give him some general ideas and let him run with it. I have never been disappointed by what he comes up with.
