Interview with Charlie Hadley

What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The thing I enjoy most about writing is the ability to share my imagination with others.

The thought that something I write might make someone smile, laugh or cry is a powerful thing.

Writing connects me to so many people I would never normally have the chance to meet and I get to share my imagination with them for a moment.

I have so many ideas rattling around, some good, some not so good, that it seems a shame to keep them all to myself when other people might like to enjoy them too!
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
The fact that I want to see what the new day holds.

A wise man once told me that nothing is impossible, if you think you can do it you can, you just have to make it your focus.

I believe that when you truly want something and are prepared to work hard and never give up then you can achieve your goals in life. Each new day is another chance to take a step towards my goals.

It isn't always easy but I surround myself with people who bring positivity into my life and seek out things that make me happy every day, and I laugh a lot.
What is your writing process?
I usually find my ideas either come to me in a dream I don't want to wake up from or when I'm in the shower. Sometimes I'll be doing something completely boring and I'll get an idea for a story and have to stop and scribble it down before I forget.

I'll either write the idea out in one of my many notebooks or I'll type as much of it out as I can straight off.

I never pre-plan anything I just sit in front of the screen or open a fresh page in my notebook and let the story flow out until I feel it has said all it wanted to say.

When I'm writing I hear the characters dialogue in my head and see their actions in my minds eye and I just write what I see, like watching a movie.

Sometimes it feels like I am experiencing the emotions myself and I think that adds to the reality. Sometimes I draw upon something I have experienced in life as a setting to add depth.

I like to search around the internet, read a lot of articles and bookmark pages of interest whether its a nice piece of lingerie, a hotel or possible location setting or just a photo to spark the memory.

I never write directly from real life, so nothing is autobiographical and I never include all the features of one person in an individual character but mix up traits of people I'm attracted to and bring them together.

It usually takes me a couple of revisits to edit a story until I'm happy with it. I do it over a couple of days so I bring fresh eyes to it.

Then I post the story out into the world and hope people enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it. Once I send it out into the world I rarely go back and read it again, I would only want to change it.
What's the story behind your latest book?
The story behind my latest book is a dream I woke up in the middle of. I was dreaming about someone and looking forward to the start of the football season and it just merged into this wonderful idea. I was enjoying it so much I didn't want to wake up.

I spent all day writing the story and then watched the match I was dreaming about that night and I couldn't help but be disappointed that my dream didn't become a reality.

But luckily the season has only just started, there's still time to make it happen!
What do you read for pleasure?
I read pretty much anything, I don't limit myself to one genre.

When I buy books I pick the ones where the cover draws my eye, I never know what they are about before I start reading them and that's half the fun!

I have author's I enjoy reading and I'll look out for their work so I keep up to date.

I also read autobiographies of people I find interesting and non-fiction from time to time as I like to learn.

People often give me books they've read and enjoyed and I like to pass on my books in the same way.

I always have a huge pile of reading to work through as I'm addicted to buying books. I tend to keep the ones I think I will read again and either pass them onto someone I know who would enjoy it or donate it to charity or a reading box.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I like to watch TV and movies. I watch Chelsea FC matches, Formula 1, sometimes cricket, tennis, rugby and athletics.

I love listening to loud music and try to see as much live music as I can. I'm also a fan of live comedy, I try and go to shows as often as I can.

I read, a lot. I spend a lot of time day dreaming and scribbling down ideas.

I like to cross stitch as it helps to clear my mind, I usually have a project on the go in the background.

I like to do yoga and try to fit in a walk everyday.

I like spending time with family and friends and catching up. I enjoy the odd game of darts, snooker, tennis, pitch and putt and football but I prefer to play for fun.

I'm usually pretty handy in a quiz and enjoy a competitive board game, especially when drinking is involved.

I like visiting new places, having new experiences, meeting new people and having fun.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I didn't intend to write erotic fiction. I've been writing other genres for about 5 years when life showed me a new path.

A friend suggested I entered an erotic fiction competition, I won, and it went on from there. I'm always surprised that I have such an active imagination for erotic writing.

I've been amazed by the response to my work and I love that people have commented on its feel of reality because that means I'm doing a good job.

I posted my first erotic story in April 2014 and I've been trying to keep up with the snowball ever since. The more I write the more people seem to want to read so I've been very lucky.

A fellow author suggested I considered publishing my work on Smashwords and that prompted me to start this new journey.

I'm excited to see where the future will take me and what other stories I have to write.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I don't often e-read books as I prefer the excitement of reading a paper book, picking it from my shelf and wondering what I will replace it with.

When I do read e-books it is on an Ipad.
What are you working on next?
I'm currently working on re-editing 9 of my stories and making them into The Naughty Nine Anthology.
It's nice to go back over some of my older work and update it as my writing style has improved with practice. I'll be publishing it here soon.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
I've found the more you get your book in circulation the better chance you have of finding your customers. I regularly Tweet the links to my books throughout the day to catch the different time zones.

I've started using CoPromote which is a nice site to reach new people. You promote messages and in turn your messages get promoted. The more you promote the more you get promoted, it's that simple.

I also make sure to add the links to my books to my website and blog which I then promote on Google+ and Stumbleupon which boosts the views.

The more people who see your links and the more options you have to offer in terms of buyer flexibility then the more customers you are likely to find.

The only stumbling block is finding a price that people are happy to pay. I have played around with my pricing and utilised the coupon options on here to try and boost sales figures which does seem to have a minimal impact.

I'm happy with the sales figures in the first month and going into month two I think if that remains steady or increases month on month then I will consider it a continuing success.
