Interview with Chayeh Gittel Bas Reuven

Why did you write "The Chossen's Guide"?
When I was in my mid-teens, I became ill with a deadly disease. Fortunately, I was cured. Since that time, I believed that I was spared in order to improve the world (tikkun olam).

I wrote "The Chossen's Guide" to perform the mitzvah of promoting the harmony, happiness and pleasure of married Jewish couples in an easily-read style that combines halacha and the latest science. This is my tikkun olam.
When did you first become interested in studying sexuality?
In my teens, years before I became sexually active. As a dedicated student, I found that learning about a subject thoroughly made me feel more secure and less anxious. Knowing what to expect made me feel more confident, so I read whatever I information I could find.
What makes "The Chossen's Guide" unique?
"The Chossen's Guide" combines halacha and new science in an approachable, easy-to-understand style. As a scientist, I want to share the latest knowledge with Jews who can use it in a practical, step-by-step manual to enhance their married lives.
What do you like to read?
I like to read a broad range of topics, especially historical novels, history, mystery and of course science, especially health-related books. I am especially interested in the mind-body interaction and the rapidly-increasing science of brain wiring (the connectome) and neuroplasticity.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
In this age of technology, being an indie author is clearly superior to the obsolete system of publishers as gate-keepers. Let the readers decide!
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Brooklyn, NY, where people are straightforward and pull few punches. When I write, I research carefully and tell an honest story because I assume that readers want to know the truth.
What's the story behind your latest book?
My sister confided that some of her friends had marital problems. Some of the problems seemed to stem from a lack of information. I wrote "The Chossen's Guide" to provide the knowledge that could help young and also experienced couples. The Appendix addresses important issues of older couples.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords provides excellent style, formatting and marketing guides. Once the work is uploaded, Smashwords makes it easy to see how it will look to a reader on a device, and to modify the format immediately. Smashwords makes modification very easy so this honing process takes very little time. I am delighted with Smashwords.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I love the feeling that I am sharing with others and b'ezras HaShem, with G-d's help, improving their lives.
