Interview with Cherie Nobbs

Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe. I loved the idea that magic was everywhere...and attainable.
How do you approach cover design?
I try to look at what it is I want to convey, usually an emotion, through the picture and everything else follows shortly thereafter. I also take guidance from experts...but, as I have authority issues, I generally choose what I wanted in the first place!
What are your five favorite books, and why?
I love most books by Nora Roberts. She captures my imagination and incorporates love and lust in a way that isn't 'just like everyone else'.
...I will ponder the rest of this question later...
What do you read for pleasure?
Anything and everything! I love expanding my mind as well as just 'chilling out'. The only genres I don't like are westerns, soppy romance and extremely violent themes.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I love the feel and smell of a book, so it will always be my first choice. However, my tablet is great for when I need to pack more than one book at a time!
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Word of mouth. As others talk about my work, they 'spread the word'.
Describe your desk
Messy as I work, but tidy before I begin the next part/project. I am a stationery addict and have at least one of everything. Although it is (sometimes) really tidy, there is a lot crammed in a small amount of space...and yes, I know exactly where everything is!
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I was born in NZ and a bit 'different' to kids my age. I had a vivid imagination and warped sense of humour. Reading and writing enabled me to experience these characteristic fully. My parents were wonderful, creating my very own 'library', complete with shelves and a light, so I could read in private while immersing myself into the fantasy of what I was reading.
When did you first start writing?
I began writing poems and stories in my early years of school and have a stash of notebooks I have written in and dragged around with me for ever!
What's the story behind your latest book?
I was handwriting the first part on an plane and the man next to me said 'I have never seen anyone write so fast! I keep thinking of that song "I want to tell you about the story of my life"!' I turned to him and said 'You are close. It is the story of 'our' life!'
I am happy to write down whatever I am guided to share.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
My friend, Karen told me all about it, and after research, I realised it fit exactly my needs. I like being independent, and yet a part of we all do!
