Interview with Cheryl Holloway

Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Gary, Indiana, the home of Michael Jackson, only it was my home first. Gary was a steel mill city back then and the people were hard workers. I was an excellent student in school and loved reading. I went to the library everyday, including Sundays. I read 1 book a day for pleasure, besides my school work. At fifteen, I entered a Crime Prevention Contest and won First Place. I have been writing stories since I was three and this was the first indication that I could "really" write. So, this was the step that started me on my writing journey. I published a book while I was still in high school. And as they say, "the rest is history."
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Just knowing that I'm going to write something inspires me each day. It doesn't matter what it is, I live and breathe to write each and every day.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I write for my readers, which gives me great joy. Therefore, each of my books has an interesting back story. So, as a result I write in a variety of genres. My first self-published book was in 2004, A Forgotten Negro League Star: A Personal Look at Al Burrows. I met Mr. Burrows in a Memorabilia Shop in Capital Heights, Maryland, where he was a Living Legend. His story was so interesting that I asked him on the spot, if he would like a book written about his life and within 6 months, the book was written. I also was a ghostwriter for a sickle cell book. It took about 5 years of research and some very hard work. However, when that book was published without my name on it, I felt slighted as a writer. So, I don’t think I will ghost write anything else and the monitorial compensation was only a fraction of what it should have been. Next, I wrote Lana’s Dream, a young adult historical fiction. The back story on that book is my granddaughter and I were in an antique store and she asked, “What is that?” It was a typewriter and an adding machine and at that moment I decided to write a historical fiction about a grandparent’s life in the 1960s for kids of today with all of their technical gadgets. It has been completed for a few years. I had a traditional publisher, who went bankrupt, so I’m still pitching to traditional publishers, but I may self-publish. Next, The Cougar Tales, I had a girlfriend, who was a potential cougar way before the phrase was coined, and she had some really great tales about her love life. So, I decided to put pen to paper and add a little drama. My latest publication is The Bane Bath Salts. I am a part-time paralegal and I had run into several cases of teen drug use and drug abuse that was devastating the family, from parents to siblings to grandparents. So, I decided to create awareness for teen drug use and drug abuse by writing this fictional story based on real facts. My next two books, How to Enhance Your Life with Prayer, and an untitled adventure are no different. So, check my website periodically to find out what’s next.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I have a Kindle. It was a gift from a former friend. However, I'm old school, I love holding and reading a book!
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Word-of-mouth works quite well for me. It's a little slow, but it does work. I am always open to other ways. I am currently exploring Blog Tours. I am not quite on board for Facebook and Twitter. I do understand that social media works much faster.
